The Nigerian Senate has given its approval for the elevation of Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole from the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The decision followed the submission and review of a report by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters. The committee’s chairman, Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, who represents Ondo Central Senatorial District, presented the findings during plenary on Tuesday.
Presenting the report, Senator Adegbonmire informed the chamber that the committee had concluded its screening and recommended that Justice Oyewole be confirmed as a Justice of the Supreme Court.
The confirmation process began after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu forwarded a formal request to the Senate last week, seeking legislative approval for the appointment in line with constitutional provisions. The letter, which was read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, cited Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) as the legal basis for the nomination.
In the correspondence, President Tinubu expressed confidence in the nominee and urged the Senate to give the request prompt consideration.
Following the reading of the letter, Senate President Akpabio referred the matter to the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for screening and reporting, a process that has now culminated in the Senate’s confirmation of Justice Oyewole.
