The Senate has approved a bill aiming to impose death penalty on individuals convicted of drug trafficking or using hard drugs and narcotics.

The bill which was titled “National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act (Amendment Bill) 2024”, was ratified following majority support from Senators at the Committee of the Whole session.

The bill altered section 11 of the NDLEA Act, stipulating that anyone who, without lawful authority engages in activities such as importing, manufacturing, producing, processing, planting, or cultivating drugs like cocaine or heroin, will be deemed guilty and subject to life improvement upon conviction.

This section was received to introduce the death penalty as punishment for individuals found guilty of these offenses.
