


Some artifact were discovered at Elem Kalabari in Rives State.
They were found beneath the soil during a digging operation.
The metal object resembling a chain is called Manilla. It was used as a form of currency in West Africa until 1940s.
Manillas were also worn as a display of wealth.
Some of the bottles, especially the V. Hoytema & Co. gin bottle were used to transport Dutch gin to the New Calabar River area, present-day Kalabari, Rivers State.
Some of these artifacts are displayed at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London.
