BREAKING: A man shot at a hospital west of Sydney had a note saying there was a bomb in his car, plunging the health precinct into lockdown.
A MAN who was shot by police at a hospital west of Sydney was carrying a note indicating there was a bomb in his car parked outside.
Police and paramedics rushed to Nepean Hospital in Penrith after reports that shots had been fired just after 4.10pm, sparking an emergency lockdown of the precinct.
It’s understood a man walked into the entrance of a building and began making threats while brandishing a knife.
He was shot in the stomach after he rushed at police officers, it’s understood.
The man was carrying a note that contained a threat about an explosive device in a black vehicle in the hospital’s car park. The bomb squad was called to the scene.
New South Wales Police would not provide any details, other than to say that a major police operation was ongoing.
Ambulance New South Wales said paramedics treated one person at the scene for a gunshot wound to the stomach.
Western Weekender newspaper reported the man was in a critical condition and undergoing emergency surgery.
Nine News reports that no one else was injured in the incident.
A woman who was at a doctor’s appointment when the situation unfolded told Channel 7 News that patients were rapidly evacuated.
“I was actually sitting in the doctor’s office with my partner in a consultation and all of a sudden there was a gun shot,” she said.
“It’s honestly giving me goosebumps right now. Who knows what could’ve happened?”
All ambulance vehicles have been diverted away from Nepean Hospital to alternative emergency rooms.
Initial details were limited but emergency procedures were enacted at the hospital, including a 100-metre exclusion zone.
The hospital up the road is currently under lockdown because there’s a shooting. This is so scary
