Commuters using the Magadi Road were left stranded after Multimedia University of Kenya students barricaded the road protesting the killing of their colleague in the Langata Road accident on Sunday as well as the critical injuring of another one on Monday by a speeding vehicle.
The student killed in the Langata Road accident, identified as Cynthia Akoth, met her death when a city-bound bus veered off the road and overturned along the busy Langata Road in Nairobi, killing four and injuring several others.
Ms Akoth was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital in critical condition, but she succumbed to her injuries. She was a First Year, first semester student who had gotten admission to Multimedia University of Kenya early September, 2016 to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Applied Communication.
Speaking to eDaily, Ms Akothi’s roommate said the deceased told her she was going to visit her aunt who lives in the outskirts of the city – and that happened to be their last conversation as she was never to return alive.
The two had hardly known each other for a month as they were both First Year students admitted to the varsity in the September intake.
A student leader at institution confirmed the passing on of Cynthia Akoth.
Four of the people injured in the accident had life-threatening injuries, police said.
The driver of the matatu lost control of the vehicle as he approached a roundabout and lurched sideways allegedly to avoid hitting a car.
Police officers from Langata and KDF soldiers from the Langata Baracks as well as Kenya Wildlife Service rangers joined in efforts to free passengers trapped inside the vehicle.
Nairobi Traffic Commandant, Leonard Katana, said they suspect the driver was speeding at the time of the accident. “Some of the survivors have said the driver was speeding at the time of the accident. We are investigating before we take action,” said Mr Katana.
The students claimed that on Monday, September 26, a Third Year student, identified as Karen Chepkemoi, was knocked down by a speeding matatu along Magadi Road while crossing the road outside the university gate.
Ms Chepkemoi, who was seriously injured, was rushed to Sinai Hospital, Rongai in critical condition Monday evening before being transferred to Upperhill Medical Centre
