Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have reportedly killed at least 15 farmers and firewood gatherers in Ala and Musune wards of Marte Local Government Area of Borno State.
The victims were reportedly ambushed on their farmlands on Thursday, October 1, 2026 while carrying out their daily activities.
Police confirmed that 15 people were killed, while three others who went to the farms with the victims remained missing. The bodies of the victims were buried according to Islamic rites.
Amnesty International has condemned the killings, describing the attack as a grave violation of international humanitarian law.
The human rights organisation disclosed this in a statement issued following the incident, saying the victims had entered surrounding bush areas to gather firewood either to earn a living or provide fuel for cooking at home.
According Amnesty International, the residents were targeted by suspected members of Boko Haram, while local farmers and other residents in the area continue to face security risks when accessing surrounding areas for their daily activities.
“The victims, who were local residents venturing into the surrounding bush to gather firewood to earn a living.or cook for their families, were ambushed and targeted by suspected Boko Haram group. Local farmers in the area continues to face these extreme risks on daily basis”, it said.
The latest incident highlights the continued danger faced by residents of.parts of Borno State where civilians depend on access to surrounding communities and bush areas for livelihoods.
The organisation urged the Nigerian authorities to ensure that measures are taken in response to the killings, authorities are also expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the Marte killings and establish the identities of those responsible.
