One surviving house amid a raging wall of water is more than a viral image; it is a warning about human vulnerability, nature’s power and the urgent need to prepare for disasters we cannot control.

By Princely Onyenwe | Editorial Desk

The shocking footage of a lone house standing amid raging floodwaters along the Nepal-Tibet border has captured the imagination of people around the world. Surrounded by an enormous volume of water and debris, with people reportedly trapped on rooftops and balconies, the building appears almost impossible to have survived the force unleashed around it.

For many people of faith, such an image naturally evokes thoughts about the power of Almighty God and the mysterious ways in which human lives can be preserved in the midst of destruction. For scientists, however, the same image presents an opportunity to examine how buildings, terrain, water pressure and natural barriers behave under extreme conditions. Both perspectives can coexist: faith may ask why a life was spared, while science seeks to understand how the event unfolded.

But behind the viral image lies a much more devastating human tragedy. Authorities have reported hundreds of deaths and thousands of people missing, while homes, roads, bridges and critical infrastructure have been destroyed or severely damaged. The speed and force of the flooding reportedly left many people with little time to escape.

What makes the catastrophe particularly disturbing is that it was not simply an ordinary case of heavy rainfall overwhelming a river. Scientific assessments indicate that a major glacier collapse or ice-rock avalanche high in the Himalayas triggered a destructive chain of events, sending enormous quantities of water, rock, mud and debris downstream.

Experts have also warned that a warming climate can contribute to the destabilisation of glaciers and high-altitude terrain, although individual disasters require careful scientific assessment before being directly attributed to climate change. This should make governments everywhere rethink what disaster preparedness really means.

The first lesson is simple: nature does not always give humanity sufficient warning. A community can go to bed believing that everything is normal and wake up facing a life-threatening emergency. Disaster management therefore cannot depend entirely on people seeing danger and running for safety. Early-warning systems, emergency communication networks, clearly identified evacuation routes and properly trained response teams must exist before disaster strikes.

The second lesson is that beautiful environments can also be dangerous environments. Mountains, rivers and valleys attract tourists, businesses and communities, but their beauty must never blind people to the risks they carry. Construction and settlement around floodplains, unstable slopes and river channels require serious environmental assessment. Development without proper risk assessment can eventually become a recipe for tragedy.

The third lesson concerns infrastructure. A house that survives while surrounding structures are swept away should prompt serious questions about building standards, foundation design, drainage, location and enforcement. Governments cannot prevent every natural disaster, but they can significantly reduce casualties by ensuring that structures in high-risk areas are properly designed, regulated and located.

There is also a powerful lesson for the developing world: disaster preparedness is not a luxury. It is part of development. However, roads, bridges, hospitals, communication systems and emergency shelters should be designed not merely for normal conditions but also for extreme events. The true test of infrastructure is not how it performs on a peaceful day, but whether it can protect human life when nature becomes hostile.

And there is another warning that should not be ignored: environmental change is becoming a security and humanitarian issue. The Himalayas contain enormous stores of ice that feed some of Asia’s major river systems. Changes in temperature can affect glaciers and high-altitude terrain, creating risks that extend far beyond the mountains themselves. Because rivers cross national boundaries, an environmental disaster in one location can quickly become a regional humanitarian crisis.

The Nepal-Tibet disaster therefore carries a message far beyond the Himalayas. Countries such as Nigeria, which regularly experience devastating floods, should pay attention. The lesson is not that every Nigerian flood will become another Himalayan catastrophe. It is that governments must stop treating flooding as an annual surprise.

Where flood risks are known, drainage systems must be maintained. Where waterways are blocked, action must be taken before the rainy season. Where settlements have become dangerously exposed, governments must consider relocation and enforce planning regulations. And where communities are vulnerable, residents must be educated about evacuation procedures rather than receiving warnings only after water has already entered their homes.

The viral image of the surviving house may eventually disappear from social media, replaced by the next trending story. But the lives lost in the disaster will not become a trend to the families still waiting for their loved ones.

That is perhaps the greatest lesson of all. Human beings may build magnificent cities, powerful machines and sophisticated technologies, but nature continues to remind us that our control has limits. Science can study glaciers, monitor hazards and develop warning systems. Engineering can produce stronger structures. Governments can improve emergency response. Faith can give survivors hope when explanations appear insufficient.

But none of these should encourage complacency. Instead, the tragedy should produce humility. If a single house standing amid a raging flood can make the world stop and wonder, then perhaps the greater miracle would be for humanity to stop merely watching disasters after they happen and begin doing everything possible to prevent avoidable deaths before they happen.

The water will eventually recede. The mud will eventually dry. Roads will be rebuilt and homes reconstructed. But whether the world learns from Nepal and Tibet will determine whether this tragedy becomes only another horrifying chapter in history—or a turning point in how humanity prepares for an increasingly unpredictable natural world.

My sincere sympathy to the affected region and condolences to the families of the deceased.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has received the final report from the flood relief disbursement committee in Maiduguri .

According to the committee, about ₦18.08 billion has been distributed to over 101,330 families affected by the recent flood disaster.

Chaired by Engr Baba Bukar Gujibawu, the committee said that the funds were distributed in cash to displaced households, along with food and non-food items.

Some of the contributors of the relief funds are UNHCR, WFP, FAO, and UNDP who donated a total of ₦4.3 billion.

The flood disaster, which occurred in September this year, has affected over one million people and displaced over hundred thousand households.

While there are reports of several lost of lives, public and private infrastructures and farmlands were also destructed.

The committee received a total of ₦28.2 billion, including a ₦10 billion contribution from the Borno State Government.

The committee’s breakdown of allocations are as follows:

Traders:_ ₦987 million to assist 7,716 traders in affected markets

Worship centres:_ ₦313 million to 814 worship centres

Private schools:_ ₦213 million to 267 private schools

Youths:_ ₦89.4 million to 1,788 youths who contributed during the flood

Private clinics:_ ₦12.5 million to 22 private clinics

At the presentation, the committee has recommended that the remaining ₦4.45 billion should be channelled to rehabilitation of earth roads in flood-hit areas and distribute the remaining food and non-food items to host communities.

Responding, Governor Zulum assured the committee that all recommendations would be implemented.

He directed the activation of a permanent disaster response structure and the reconstruction of road networks destroyed by the flood.

Khadija Ngulde (9NEWS NIGERIA, BORNO)

Three months after the devastating September flood that ravaged Borno State’s capital Maiduguri and other parts of the state, the state governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum and World Bank delegation have visited Alau Dam, the source of water that caused the flood and Fori Bridge.

The tour of these places was part of a courtesy visit by the World Bank county director for Nigeria, Dr. Ndiame Diop, to Governor Zulum on Monday and to assess the damages caused by the natural disaster.

According to a release by the governor’s spokesman, Dauda Iliya, Dr. Diop was first hosted at the Government House in Maiduguri.

While speaking at the event, Governor Zulum called on the World Bank to assist in reconstructing bridges destroyed by the recent flooding and dredging the silted Alau Dam.

Highlighting it’s devastating impact, Zulum said it has destroyed critical infrastructures, blocked waterways, and damaged farmlands across the state.

“Flooding has significantly affected our farmers. Without comprehensive dredging, we cannot solve this problem. We need increased support to address these challenges,” he said, emphasizing the urgency for additional assistance to dredge waterways and acquire desilting equipment.

Zulum also detailed the broader challenges facing Borno State, including the damages caused by the Boko Haram insurgency.

While terrorizing people and destroying their properties in over a decade long period, the terrorist group has caused an estimated damages of over $6 billion in infrastructure losses in the Northeast region.

According to Zulum, Borno accounts for more than half of these damages.

“Out of the $6.9 billion losses incurred across the Northeast, Borno accounts for about two-thirds.

“The insurgency destroyed critical infrastructure and disrupted livelihoods, but with support from the World Bank and other partners, we are rebuilding,” he said.

However, the governor praised the impact of World Bank-supported initiatives such as the Multi-Sectoral Crisis Recovery Project (MCRP), Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACRESAL), and the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP).

He also appealed for additional support for projects like the South Chad Irrigation Scheme and other agricultural programs to revitalize Borno’s vast arable land, critical for food security and economic recovery.

Zulum further urged the World Bank to expedite the implementation of the Health Resilience Project to strengthen healthcare services and ensure residents’ well-being.

In his remarks, Diop commended Borno State government for its achievements in education and post-insurgency recovery efforts.

He noted that to enhance development across key sectors in the state, the bank is pledging its sustained support.

“We have observed significant progress in technical education and infrastructure rehabilitation. Borno’s recovery efforts are commendable, and we are happy to support these initiatives,” Dr. Diop stated.

He also highlighted the impact of ongoing World Bank projects like the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) and the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA), which are rebuilding schools and empowering vulnerable populations.

“Borno is critical to Nigeria’s development, and we will continue to support your efforts in education, health, agriculture, and recovery from insurgency and climate-related challenges,” he affirmed.

Zulum 16">
9News Nigeria

Borno State governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum has said that the destructions caused by flood in the state is not only caused by the failure of the Alau Dam, but also the unlawful construction of homes on water channels.

He said this while inspecting some areas in the state capital Maiduguri, which were most hit by the flood disaster.

Zulum pointed out several houses that have been built directly inside the river and stream beds, which he believes has worsened the flood’s impact.

”This flood destruction wasn’t just caused by the failure of the Alau Dam alone. Many of the places destroyed, as you can see, are not just on the riverbank but actually within the stream itself,” he said.

”Look at this particular house, it’s inside the river, and so are many others,” he added while inspecting some of the houses destroyed by the flood.

However, Governor Zulum has vowed to take action to prevent future occurrence of flood in the state.

The devastating September floods has submerged large parts of Maiduguri, Jere and Konduga local government areas of Borno.

Essential infrastructures such as hospitals, markets, schools, police stations and barracks, and thousands of homes were affected by the flood disaster.

The governor explained that tougher regulations would be enforced to prevent further construction in flood-prone areas.

He stated that the government would impose restrictions on building in waterways and demolish existing structures that pose a risk.

”We cannot sacrifice the whole of Maiduguri just to please less than ten thousand people.

”The government will impose regulations to stop anyone from building houses on waterways, and we will also demolish those that have not been carried away by the flood,” he explained.

Foreseeing such incidents, Zulum recalled that his administration had attempted to clear and prevent such illegal structures but many took it personal and sabotaged the government efforts.

The governor called for patience and cooperation from the public as the government moves forward with preventive measures.

While the destruction was beyond the state’s control, Zulum noted that efforts were underway to seek assistance from the federal government and other development partners to minimize the impact of destruction caused by the flood.

‘I appeal to the general public to be patient and cooperate with the government. The destruction is beyond the Borno State government, but we have reached out to the federal government as well as the North East Development Commission for support.’

Some of the critically affected areas in the city, includes; University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), the State Specialist Hospital, Monday Market, Gomboru Cattle Market, Kasuwan Gwoza, 505 Housing Estate, Muna Community, Moromoro Market, Gwange, Galtimari, Fori, Lagos Street, Custome Area, and other communities.

Flood victims in the Galtumari community of Maiduguri have received support as they return to their homes after a devastating flood that displaced thousands.

The Peace Ambassador Center for Humanitarian Aid and Empowerment (PACHE), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Great Green World, FASGON, donated relief items to the affected residents on International Day of Peace.

The flood, which ravaged 80 percent of the Galtumari community, forced many to flee their homes and took shelter from various Internally Displaced Persons IDPs provided by the Borno State Government.

Ambassador Ahmed Shehu, founder of PACHE, who led a delegation of Yoths Peace Advocates and other invited guests in a walk to the area, expressed sympathy for the victims and pledged support.

‘We are here to sympathize with you on this important day of International Day of Peace,’he said. ‘We selected this community because of the high level of devastation.’

Mal. Usman Aliyu, Director General of the Great Green Wall Agency also was among the visitors to the community and pledged continued support.

He urged residents to avoid building near river areas and emphasized the importance of mitigating climate change through tree planting whereby donating 50 trees to be planted in the community.

Abubakar Muhammad Sa’id, representing the First Aid Sunnah Group of Nigeria (FASGON), sympathized with the victims and donated relief items that was sourced through the organisation from Kano.

Many of the flood victims expressed gratitude for the support they have received.

Falmata Muhammad, who returned home after 19 days of displacement, said that government and non-governmental organizations have been swift to provide aid.

‘Now that we are back to our homes, we need government to build our houses and restore normalcy in our communities,’ she added.

The donated items included sanitary parts, mosquito nets, mosquito coils, clothes, and underwear among others.

As the flood victims continue to rebuild their lives, the support they have received from various organizations has been crucial in helping them recover from this disaster.

A man has divorced his wife publicity at a flood victims camp in Maiduguri, Borno State capital.

The incident happened at an unofficial temporary camp, providing shelter to internally displaced persons at Fori, a community situated along the river that flooded Maiduguri.

The camp is hosting over 1,000 people from Fori, Aji-Alari, Galtimari and Gwange communities.

According to eye witnesses, the woman is among many people who disguise themselves among the victims of flood in camps to access interventions.

Narrating the incident, one of the camp managers who didn’t authorize his name to be mentioned said that ‘the man stormed into the camp yesterday in his car, Mercedes C-class, along with his teenage son.

‘He came out of the car furiously and handed his son a paper, assumed to be a divorce paper and asked him to take it to his mother saying he has divorced her,” he said.

Describing the incident as shocking, another eye witness narrated that the woman started shouting and crying upon receiving the letter.

While expressing his anger on his wife, the husband of the divorcee complained that he has food, stocked in his store in their house, enough to feed his family for more than three months, adding that ‘instead of cooking food an bringing to thess flood victims, she has joined them, what is she looking for here,’ he shouted in anger.

People familiar with the man said that he is a businessman who engaged in both domestic and international trade.

In an interview with Falmata Abba, a resident of Maiduguri, she noted that the practice of people disguising themselves as IDPs to get food and non-food donations is very common in the city.

‘I was at a camp looking for someone few days ago, and when I went in, someone offered me a room and asked if I have children to occupy it in other to receive government intervention,’ she said, while narrating her experience.

At Fori camp however, they are yet to receive the Borno State government N10,000 cash donation to flood victims and other intervention programs.

The camp is managed by youth volunteer group in the community who mobilizes food from donors in the community to feed the flood victims.

According to them, while the have secured the data of all genuine flood victims in the camp, they have not received any support or intervention from government, NGOs and other formal bodies.

However, they noted that they have received a medical team from University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital on Monday who are taking care of health concerns in the camp.

A protest has erupted in Maiduguri, Borno State, by victims of flood disaster.

According to sources, the protesters were protesting against what they alleged as the unfair distribution of relief assistance and aid by the government and other related bodies.

It was gathered that the angry protesters have blocked a traffic at Baga Road junction in Maiduguri on Friday.

This is coming after majority of displaced persons were resettling in their homes, a week after their displacement by the devastating flood that ravaged some parts of the state.

Responding to the protesters, the Borno State command of the Nigerian Police Force, has called for calm on the situation.

The commissioner of the command, CP Mohammed Lawal Yusufu, urged all displaced flood victims in Maiduguri to remain calm and composed.

He made the call while addressing the affected individuals, emphasizing the importance of patience.

He assured them that the Borno State Government, in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and other humanitarian organizations, have implemented essential relief measures.

CP Yusufu cautioned against negative impact of the protest, saying ”obstructing traffic would worsen the situation and potentially compromise peace in the state.”

”Displaced victims have been issued token cards to receive government-distributed palliatives.

”The public is encouraged to continue their lawful activities without apprehension, as the command maintains its commitment to upholding law and order,” he added.

The recent flooding in Borno State, triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam on September 10, has displaced thousands of Maiduguri’s residents.

According to the state governor in a broadcast earlier, over one million people have been affected in the state capital as well as Jere and Konduga local government areas of Borno.

It was reported that the disaster has also resulted in the loss of at least 30 lives and significant damage to homes and infrastructures.

Both the government at different levels and humanitarian organisations are providing emergency assistance to address urgent needs, such as access to food, clean water and sanitation.

It is also on record that a donation and pledges of over N12bn was received by the Borno State government as donation to victims of the flood.

The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has announced the resumption of lectures and office duties starting Monday, next week.

This is following improvements in the general condition of the city of Maiduguri, Borno State’s capital, after the occurrence of flood disaster that ravaged the city.

The university registra, Ahmad A. Lawan made this known in a circular on Thursday.

This decision comes in sequel to the temporary suspension of activities due to recent flooding that affected the campus community.

It is also noted that major access roads to the institution which were prior closed due to rehabilitation works have now been completed and open for use.

The university management also expressed sympathy for those impacted by the floods and pray for peace and protection against further occurrences.

All other public and private primary and secondary schools are expected to resume on the 23rd this month as that marks the end of the two weeks break established by the Borno State government during the flood.

Relative stability has also returned to the city and most temporary camps have now been closed and victims resettled.

An unofficial camp for victims of flood disaster in Borno State’s capital, Maiduguri, is continue struggling to feed Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

This was disclosed by some of the camp managers on Tuesday who noted that they are yet to receive any support or intervention from the government or any other formal groups or body.

The camp, located at Fori community, now host about 2000 flood victims.

This is coming after the state governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum is planning to empty and close all temporary flood vuctims’ camps within Maiduguri.

This newspaper has reported on Thursday last week how community members at Fori were mobilizing resources to feed the IDPs at Fori camp.

The report also highlighted some challenges in the camp, including shortage of food, medicine, mosquito nets and other needs, faced by children aged men and women and wet mothers at Fori camp.

Managed by some volunteer community youths, the camp is hosting flood victims from Fori, Aji-Alari, Galtimari and Gwange communities, all situated within Maiduguri.

According to the camp managers, the camp is abandoned by the government and other official intervention groups, therefore, resorting to recieving cooked food from the community members to feed the flood victims.

”We are yet to receive any intervention from the government, NGOs or any official body, so we are still struggling to feed this people with the little donations we are getting from people.

”We learned that Galtimari camp, a flood victims camp in the neighboring community, has received several interventions from the government but we don’t know why they abandoned us,” Aba-Aji Adamu, one of the camp managers said.

He explained that they are also aware of Governor Zulum’s cash intervention of N10,000 to each flood victim but it has not reached their location.

”Maybe they have forgotten about us because we are in a remote location,” he added.

However, the camp managers said that they have separately received officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and World Food Program (WFP), an International Non Governmental Organization, who assured to bring them support.

They also noted that they are expecting the NEMA official to return tomorrow.

”She collected the data of the victims and promised to work something out,” Umar, one of the managers said.

Mr. Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, has donated N50m to flood victims in Borno State.

He announced the donation during his sympathy visit to Maiduguri on Tuesday.

Accompanied by Labour Party deputy presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Ahmed Datti, Mr. Obi visited the state governor in government house as well as the Shehu of Borno at his palace.

This is in addition to several billions of naira granted to the state to cushion the effects of the flood disaster that ravaged some parts of the state’s capital, Maiduguri and Jere and Konduga local government areas of the state.

Similarly the acting PDP National Chairman, Umar Illiya Damagum, has donated the sum of N25 million to the Borno State Government to support victims of the disaster.

Another PDP cheiftaain in Borno State, Mohammed Imam has also donated N50 million to alleviate the suffering of the victims.

It can be recalled that this newspaper had reported earlier how Mr. Imam visited the Shehu of Borno and other affected areas in Maiduguri to sympathize with the flood victims.

He also donated some food and non-food materials worth’s millions of naira to the flood survivors.

Imam is a popular politician in Borno State who on several occasions contested for the governorship seat in the state under PDP.

These donations were however recieved by Borno State governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum on Tuesday.

Responding to these interventions, Gov. Zulum expressed gratitude to the donors.

Emphasizing the significant impact they will have on the relief efforts, he also promised to utilize the resources judiciously in providing essential aid, including food, shelter, and medical care, to those affected by the floods.

”This outpouring of support serves as a testament to the compassion and solidarity of Nigerian philanthropists and leaders,” Gov. Zulum said.

”As the affected communities begin the process of recovery and rebuilding, these contributions will undoubtedly play a vital role in their journey towards healing and restoration,” Zulum added.

With the latest developments, Borno government has recieved over N8bn in cash donations among other goods running into millions for victims of flood.

Zulum Flags Off Relief Distribution, Unveiles Plan For Adequate Assessment Of Victims 40">
9News Nigeria

Borno State governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has officially launched the distribution of relief materials to victims affected by flood in Maiduguri, Borno State’s capital.

Other victims include communities under Jere and Konduga local government areas of the state.

The relief distribution took place on Monday at Bakasi Camp along Domboa Road, Maiduguri.

Each beneficiary received a 25kg bag of rice, a carton of spaghetti, and 10,000 Naira in cash.

The flood disaster, which displaced thousands and destroyed hundreds of houses and other important public and private facilities, was triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam, a water reservoir in Konduga local government, about 100 kilometers away from Maiduguri.

Speaking to journalists, Governor Zulum expressed concern about the influx of people into the IDP camps that serves as shelter to the displaced persons.

He noted that many people inside the camps are not actually affected by the floods.

‘We have observed that it is no longer sustainable to continue receiving people in the camps because many people who were not affected are coming to the camps,’ Gov. Zulum said.

To respond to that, the governor announced their plans to address it.

He said they would conduct a thorough assessment of the affected areas to inform future interventions.

‘We have decided to mobilize resources to ensure that each affected victim receives relief items.

‘We have also concluded arrangements to conduct a community-level assessment to verify the actual number of those affected,’ Gov. Zulum explained.

Stating further, Governor Zulum acknowledged the receipt of a food donation from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.

Other donors he mentioned are National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to support the flood victims.

The Director General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar has also highlighted her agency’s interventions for flood victims.

She said they are providing shelters and mobile water purifiers to ensure access to clean drinking water to the IDPs.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Obetekun has said that three police stations have been damaged by flood in Maiduguri, Borno State’s capital.

This he disclosed in Maiduguri on Monday when he visited the state to assess the situation and sympathize with victims of the devastating flood disaster.

The flood has affected several communities in the state and rendered thousands homeless, as well as destroyed businesses and important public and private facilities.

During his visit, the IGP met with Governor Babagana Umara Zulum at the Borno State Government house.

He commended the swift response of the governor while they discussed about relief efforts and rebuilding the affected areas.

In his remarks the IGP acknowledged the impact of the flood on the police community, noting that three police stations and outposts affected, as well as the modern police training school in the city.

The damage, he said has hindered police operations in the affected areas and pledged the support of the Nigerian Police Force in relief efforts and rebuilding affected police institutions.

He added that the force is committed to helping those affected by the flood.

However, the IGP has ordered the rebuilding of the affected police facilities in Maiduguri, as disclosed in a press statement on Monday evening.

While responding, Governor Zulum expressed gratitude for the IGP’s visit and the support of the police force in addressing the flood crisis.

Similarly, the governor praised the police for their efforts during the recent protest and their role in rescuing individuals affected by the flood in Maiduguri.

Zulum also congratulated the IGP on his confirmation and assured him of his administration’s support in rebuilding damaged police structures.

He emphasized that the support will help restore police operations in the affected areas.

Life has a way of reminding us of our shared humanity, often in ways that are both sudden and humbling. In the blink of an eye, everything we hold dear—our wealth, status, and possessions—can be swept away, leaving us vulnerable and exposed to the forces beyond our control. The recent flood has served as a powerful reminder that no amount of material wealth can shield us from the unpredictability of life.

In moments like this, it becomes clear that what truly defines us is not the wealth we accumulate or the status we hold but the way we treat others, especially those we may perceive as beneath us.

This disaster has laid bare the fragility of human life and, more importantly, the artificial divisions we create based on social class and material wealth. The floodwaters do not discriminate between rich and poor, powerful and powerless. In the face of such devastation, we are all equal.

It is easy to fall into the trap of believing that our wealth or success somehow makes us superior, but this flood has taught us otherwise. It has shown us that we must look deeply at how we treat those who may not have as much as we do. Our behavior towards those below us in status—whether in terms of wealth, education, or power—is a reflection of our true character.

We must remember that life is unpredictable, and circumstances can change in an instant. The people we overlook today may be the very ones we need tomorrow. The lesson here is not just about humility; it’s about empathy, compassion, and respect for all human beings, regardless of their position in life.

As we rebuild our homes and our lives, let us also rebuild our sense of community and care for one another. Let us remember that we are all in this together and that the true measure of a person is not found in their wealth or status but in their kindness, generosity, and willingness to stand with others in times of need.

This flood, devastating as it is, has given us an opportunity to reflect on what truly matters: the relationships we build, the compassion we show, and the dignity with which we treat every human being. Let this be a turning point, a reminder that we must uplift and support one another, not just in times of crisis but in every moment of our lives.

Dr. Sheriff, also known as Dr. LOGIST, is the President, Association of Resident Doctors, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, writes from Maiduguri.

Victims of flood in Borno State has gotten another N100m donation as a support to help them in their trying times.

This was following over N5bn donations by different people and government bodies.

The latest donation was granted by the Yobe State government.

The state governor, Mai Mala Buni presented the donation during a sympathy visit to Borno State governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum on Saturday in Maiduguri.

Governor Buni described the flood disaster and humanitarian crisis as ‘catastrophic’ and emphasized the urgent need for collective support.

“Yobe and Borno states are like twins that have suffered similar fates and need the support of one another,” he said.

In addition to his government’s contribution, Gov. Buni personally donated foodstuffs worth N50 million to those impacted by the disaster.

He also offered prayers for the souls lost in the floods and wished for the swift recovery of those affected.

On his part, Governor Zulum expressed gratitude to the Yobe government and its people for their generous assistance.

“The people of Yobe and Borno states remain one united family; what affects one, affects the other,” he said.

He praised Gov. Buni for reinforcing the bond between the two states and for his consistent support since taking office.

“Your administration has on several occasions identified with the government and people of Borno state.

“The government and people of Borno state deeply appreciate Your Excellency for this very kind gesture” Gov. Zulum said.

As the flood incident enters day six, many victims are trying to evacuate their location to seek for shelter elsewhere, while thousands that were displaced are taking shelter in official and nonofficial IDP camps across the city.

In Fori community, hundreds of Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs have taken shelter in a public school, following a devastating flood that rendered them homeless.

Over 500 in number, the displaced persons are from communities situation across the river bank that flooded Maiduguri.

They are Fori, Aji-Alaji and Galtimari and the victims include, children, wet mothers, sick persons and aged-men and women.

The flood disaster started on Tuesday in Maiduguri, Borno State capital, affecting several communities in the city.

This newspaper had reported how the flood has displaced thousands of residents in the metropolis and Jere local government area of Borno.

While the school facility, Fori Primary School serves as their temporary shelter, the flood victims are faced with difficulty with feeding, health services and other basic needs.

In an effort to bring succur to the IDPs, the community members are mobilizing resources to provide food, water and other emergency needs of the people.

According to Abba-Aji Adamu, a resident of the Fori, they started mobilizing resources through voluntary donations from people around the community.

In an interview with this reporter, he noted that because of the remote location of the community, it was hard to access intervention from the government and other support groups.

‘Immedietly after they took shelter in the school, we realized that many of them had not eaten throughout the day and we didn’t hesitate to start seeking for donations in our immediate community to feed them.

‘With the little we gathered in the evening, we have managed to provide them with little food stuffs, and as I am speaking to you now, we are still mobilizing money to buy and cook their next meal,’ he said.

Mr. Adamu, also one of the coordinators of the unofficial camp, said that even with the intervention they are receiving, it is far from enough.

He also called on the state government and other philanthropists to not forget victims of flood at Fori and it’s environs.

‘Even as I speak to you, we have received 400 loafs of bread from a politician, Honorable Mai Jama’a. We are not getting enough, but they are our people and we cannot abandoned them,’ Mr. Adamu added.

Speaking with some of the victims, they narrated how water submerged their houses and destroying their food stuffs and other valuables.

Now three days in their temporary shelter, they said that feeding and hygiene is a major problem.

Fati Mohammed Ali, one of the flood survivors said that people had to intervene and rescue her and her seven children in their house at night.

‘Our house collapsed immediately after we were evacuated. My husband is late and if people had not intervened, we would have drown in the river,’ the mother of seven orphans said.

Also, Fatima Ali, another victim said that her infant baby is not getting adequate breastfeeding due to lack of proper feeding in their camp.

She said that other challenges like lack of mosquito nets, blankets for their children is making life difficult for them.

‘My child is only three weeks old and is already suffering from cold,’ she added.

Similarly, a football club, Fori Young Stars has embraced the resources mobilization to help the flood victims.

According to Babagana Waziri, the team head coach, he tasked his players to contribute a certain amount of money as contribution to the IDPs.

‘We have N17,000 in the club account and I directed our accountant to include it in the donation, while we tasked each player in the team to donate at least N500 or more to help the flood victims,’ Waziri explained.

Fori Young Stars is a local football club in the community, who plays in the state’s league second division.

Note: While several unofficial and official camps hosting victims of flood disaster across Maiduguri are accessing intervention from the government and other support groups, the displaced people at Fori, Aji-Alaji and Galtimari are wallowing in starvation.

If you are interested in making a donation, kindly contact Sadiq Abubakar on 09071760903 or donate to this account: 9027614155 Opay.

The Fulbe Global Development and Rights Initiative (FGDRI) has expressed deep sympathy and solidarity with the people of Borno State following the severe flooding that has struck the capital, Maiduguri.

The organization condemned the disaster’s extensive damage, which has led to significant loss of life, property, and has displaced hundreds of thousands of residents.

This was contained in a statement signed by President General of the Organization, Salim Musa Umar, PhD on Wednesday.

FGDRI is a nongovernmental organization that connect nonprofits, donors, and companies to work together in achieving their objectives.

With networks in several countries, they aimed to help fellow nonprofits access the funding, tools, training, and other needed supports.

The flood’s impact in Maiduguri has disrupted daily life in Maiduguri, affecting businesses, schools, and community services.

FGDRI’s leadership also conveyed heartfelt condolences to the state governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum and the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Umar Garbai, acknowledging the enormity of the crisis faced by the city’s residents.

In response to the disaster, FGDRI has called on Nigerians to demonstrate solidarity with the victims by providing support to help restore normalcy.

The organization welcomed the Federal Government’s immediate intervention under President Tinubu, viewing it as a crucial step in alleviating the victims’ suffering.

FGDRI also urged the federal government to collaborate with Borno State authorities to develop strategies to prevent future emergencies and minimize their impact.

Now in its fourth day, the flood crisis in Maiduguri is still devastating some parts of the city.

While there are reports of Hope in some communities, many are still struggling to evacuate their environment to seek for shelter elsewhere.

Businesses and other essential services are also disrupted living the residents at the mercy of scarse resources.

As residents of Maiduguri, Borno State capital continue to struggle amidst flood disaster, there has been a heavy rainfall in the city.

However, the rainfall lasted for few minutes in the afternoon according to residents from different parts of the metropolis and Jere local government area of the state.

Some residents interviewed by this reporter also indicated that the rain has no negative effect to the already dire situation.

Similarly, there has been a network outrage in the city for about four hours.

The network services which went off around 12 noon, was restored around 3:00PM

The current flood incident has displaced thousands of residents and destroyed homes, businesses and roads network across the city.

While the water level has subsided in some areas, other communities are still inaccessible with their residents taking shelters elsewhere.

Other victims were however hosted in a temporary IDP camps established by the state government.

The disaster stems from an overflow and breach of sections of the Alau Dam, a water reservoir in Konduga local government area of Borno, which flows through to Maiduguri.

Among other things, the access water from the dam is used for irritation in local communities around the river, as well as potable drinking water in the city.

A young aspiring poetess in Maiduguri, Borno State capital has written a poem expressing the resilience of the people of the state in the midst of adversity.

The poetess, Zainab Abba Sanusi, is a student of Borno State University, who hailed from the state.

In the poem, she described how people of the state have resisted many calamities both in the past and present.

While encouraging the people to resist the current flood disaster that is sweeping across the city, the talented poetess also recalled several adversities that befallen the city for several years.

She noted that challenges are a test from God and most be accepted and hope for relief.

See except of the poem below:

My home. By Xaynab

Yerwa, my home, a home of peace
A state, a city, that has faced release
From calamities, insurgency, and what-not
Yet rises from the ashes, strong and resilient

Mothers’ cries echo through the air
As homes, memories, are lost, and beyond repair
A father watches, helpless and in pain
As his family, home, and children are swept away, like grains of sand

The streets we ran, played, and laughed
Now swim away, like tears, in the aftermath
But still, we hold on to faith and hope
A test from Allah, a night of terror we must face.

Trauma and pain, we cannot deny
But resilience and hope, are the only options to survive.
For Yerwa, our home, will rise again
Stronger, greater, like the morning sun’s rays.
From the ashes, just like Phoenix, born of pain

This was confirmed in a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy, on Tuesday.

Described as the worst flood in recent decades, the disaster has displaced thousands of residents and impacted essential facilities including the Post Office, Nigerian Custom Service Office, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) and others.

In his statement, President Tinubu conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the Borno State government and its residents, especially those who have lost their sources of livelihood due to the flood.

The flooding was caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam, a water reservoir in Konduga local government area that flows through Maiduguri city.

As the relevant authorities continue to evaluate the damage, President Tinubu has urged for the immediate evacuation of individuals from the affected areas.

He assured the Borno state that the federal government is prepared to work together to address the urgent humanitarian needs of victims and those displaced.

Additionally, the president has directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide aid to the flood victims.

“He remains committed to mobilizing federal resources to support the state during this difficult time,” the statement read.

In response to the devastating flood that has over taken major parts of Maiduguri, the Borno State government has set up two relief camps for displaced persons in the city.

The camps are located at Bakassi and Dalori areas of the metropolis which have not been affected by the rising waters.

Many families across the city have been rendered homeless after houses and major residential areas got submerged in the water.

The camps were set up by the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) as emergency shelter for victims of the flood.

According to the government, Bakassi camp will shelter about 10,000 families while the Dalori camp will host other victims, and would be managed by SEMA officials.

While the agency urges the affected people to take refuge in these camps, many individuals who have fled their homes do not have access to these areas due to road inaccessibility.

At the time of filling this report, families in their thousands continue to evacuate their homes to squat in buildings and communities on higher grounds.
