In a decisive move to restore environmental sanity and improve public health standards, the Executive Chairman of Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area, Hon. Agbaje Lukmon Abiodun, has commenced an intensive clean-up exercise along the Camp Davies/Isefun Road corridor.

The initiative targets the persistent challenge of indiscriminate refuse dumping on the road median, which has posed environmental and safety concerns for residents and commuters within the axis.

Modern compact cleaning equipment were deployed to evacuate accumulated waste, while the Head of Department (Environment), Mrs. Babajide Racheal, supervised the operation to ensure effective execution.

Speaking during the exercise, Hon. Agbaje emphasized the administration’s zero-tolerance policy toward environmental violations, urging residents to embrace responsible waste disposal practices by patronizing approved Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste operators.

“We will no longer tolerate actions that endanger public health and degrade our environment. Collective responsibility is essential if we must build a cleaner, safer, and healthier community,” the Chairman stated.

As part of sustained sanitation reforms, the Council has introduced monitoring mechanisms and enforcement measures, including strict penalties for individuals found violating environmental regulations.

The clean-up campaign forms part of the Council’s broader agenda aimed at strengthening sanitation management, enhancing infrastructure, and promoting a sustainable urban environment across the LCDA.

Governor Babajide in his opening remarks on the water ways captured by 9News Nigeria was that the action on the water was pure skill, speed, and teamwork on display in Lagos Nigeria.

Today, Sunday will be the finals and Lagos state is positioned to led other water ways across the state of the Federation after this super match.

Some participants interviewed during the festival said, the boat regatta in Lagos State will certainly help encourage more people to participate in boat races, thereby helping them with the skills to compete on the world stage. Host Governor Sanwo-Olu told the press at the African Blue Economy Summit in Lagos, that he shared his belief that Nigerian waterways hold the key to the city’s future.

“The ocean is not just our heritage, it is our opportunity for jobs, innovation, transport, and resilience against climate change.

“Hosting the E1 Lagos GP championship this week has shown how water can inspire not only sport and entertainment, but also big ideas in technology and sustainability.

The Police Command in Lagos State has declared a suspected land-grabber (name withheld) wanted in connection with the killing of three persons in Owode Onirin area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos.

He said that preliminary investigations and available prima facie evidence linked the suspect, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Prosperous Ariori Golden Venture Limited, to the crime.

Hindering said the suspect was involved in the clash between traders and land grabbers, which left three people dead and a Police Inspector severely injured.

“Three persons sustained fatal injuries and were confirmed dead when they were rushed to the hospital by the police.

“The police victim is in a critical and life-threatening condition at the hospital, where he is receiving treatment.

A three-year-old boy, Chibuike Uba, has lost his life after falling into an open soakaway at Babarinsa in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State.

According to THE PUNCH Metro said that the incident occurred on Wednesday when the boy’s mother, Utoro, visited her aunt in the community.

Utoro, who resides in the Epe area of the state, was packing her belongings and preparing to leave when her son left her in the room to meet her aunt who stepped out to make a phone call.

However, when her aunt returned, Uba asked about the child’s whereabouts, only to realise he was nowhere to be found.

In a frantic search, Uba spotted her son’s slippers near the open soakaway on the next compound and raised the alarm.

In a voice note sent to our correspondent on Thursday, Utoro, who had since remained inconsolable, said, “I visited my aunt and was packing my bags to head back home when she received a call and my son followed her outside. I continued packing, assuming he was still with her. When she came back inside, I asked about my son’s whereabouts, and she claimed he had returned inside. I said no and quickly rushed outside to search for him but couldn’t find him.

“That was when I noticed his slippers near the soakaway on the next compound beside the house because it has no fence. I immediately shouted that my baby was inside the soakaway. That was how we quickly made efforts to pull him out and rushed him to the hospital.”

The Lagos State Government has lamabasted the member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Ushie Uguamaye, for stating that “Lagos is smelling.”

In a chat with our correspondent, the Director, Public Affairs of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Kunle Adesina, stated that despite seeing Lagos as smelly, the corps member still goes about enjoying the night life the city has to provide as seen in her TikTok videos.

He said those who hold such view are actually the ones who troop into Lagos in droves to put undue pressure on the infrastructure in the state.

“They can always say whatever they want to say, but what they fail to realise is that it is the same people who come into Lagos in droves, in thousands on a daily basis, that make a mess of all the steps that the state government is always putting in place. Yes, they are the ones.

“When we say there should be no street trading, they are the same ones who carry backpack on their back, who come into Lagos with no family, no kind of lineage, or where to put their head at night and sleep. They are the ones selling at the bus stops or even in the traffic. They are the ones messing up the roads with open defecation. They are the ones who engage in it, and at the same time they turn around to accuse the government of not doing what is right.

“They are the same people who make a mess of all the programs and plans to put in place, and when you try to even use the long hands of the law on them, people keep shouting, the government is too draconian. You are applying force

“You can’t stop them; they will tell you they are citizens of Nigeria which allows free movement, free exit for everybody. There is no law that says ‘Mister, you cannot come from Sokoto or from Anambra State to Lagos.’ You can’t stop them.

“Their influx is part of what has put some of the undue pressures on our social social infrastructure. So me, I won’t be the one to to be propagating all the nonsensical thought she talked about. I’ve seen several pictures of the lady in night clubs and all the rest, enjoying herself in the same Lagos,” he said.

Further speaking, he said despite what such people think about Lagos, global organisations have always rated the state in good light.

On the corps member’s claim that the cost of living in Lagos is too high, Adeshina pointed out that the situation is not peculiar to the state alone.

He said, “If you say things are too expensive, global recession is not only about Lagos. I remember the last time I had opportunity of traveling. What wnormally buy for $1, when we went there, they were selling for five, six, 10 dollars. When I asked the people, they said, well, it’s not only in Nigerian, the issue is global.”

He said the life on the island and places like Lekki is not meant for everyone, just as he urged people to live within their means.

The Lagos State Government plans to distribute a total of N3.1 billion to approximately 1,000 retired individuals who diligently served the state under the Contributory Pension Scheme.

The state Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced this news, expressing his appreciation for the retirees’ tireless efforts and emphasizing that their contributions have been recognized.

He acknowledged that these retirees played a crucial role in establishing the prosperous state.

Likewise, in August 2023, the Lagos State Government had already disbursed N2.017 billion to 644 retirees, covering their previous service benefits prior to the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme in 2007.

While thanking the retirees for their unwavering dedication, Sanwo-olu noted that their contributions form the very foundation of the vibrant state.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said tweeted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account saying that he was happy to share some news with the retirees. He tweeted “I hope will put smiles on the faces of families.”

“Next week, we’re set to disburse N3.1bn under the Contributory Pension Scheme to over 1,000 retirees who have served our state tirelessly.

“It is pertinent to take note of the fact that in the lifetime of our administration, we have disbursed over N60 billion as pension to over 17,000 retirees. This achievement fills us with pride.”

While thanking the retirees for their unwavering dedication, Sanwo-olu noted that their contributions form the very foundation of the vibrant state.

Ijora under-bridge

The Lagos State Government has announced its plan to convert the recently cleared Ijora under-bridge into a creational space.

Giving an update following the exercise, Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a post on his X handle revealed that the cleared space will be used for the public benefit of Lagos residents.

He also lamented that block moulders, fuel sellers, and miscreants occupying the space under the bridge pose a security risk, stressing that the government would not allow it to continue.

He wrote, “Following the expiration of the Commissioner’s five-day notice to unauthorised inhabitants of the Ijora Under-Bridge, the Special Task Force, under the direction of ACP Bayo Sulaiman, executed the removal of makeshift structures. Subsequently, the Lagos Waste Management Authority swiftly commenced the removal of debris.

“This initiative, however, extends beyond mere demolition and clearing. Guided by the directives of Governor #jidesanwoolu and HC #tokunbo_wahab, a team comprising the General Manager of LASPARK, Hon. Adetoun Popoola; the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende; and the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Abiodun Ogunleye, has embarked on a mission to transform this area into a recreational space.

“This endeavour aims to restore the public space for the benefit of Lagos residents, with community members also participating in the inspection and planning process.

Bolanle Raheem: Insecurity, extrajudicial killings have worsened in Lagos under Sanwo-Olu — Mr Macaroni Popular Skit maker and activist

Adebowale Adedayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, has said that insecurity in Lagos State has worsened under the tenure of the present governor of the state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.Macaroni said this via his Twitter page on Monday morning.

As part of the ongoing efforts to rid Lagos State of distressed buildings, the Lagos State Building Control Agency says it has marked over 10 structures in the state for demolition, 9news Nigeria learned.

A statement by the Head, Public Affairs, LASBCA, Adetayo Asagba, said the buildings were marked for being structurally distressed and unsafe for habitation.

The development came on the heels of the demolition of a distressed building located at 47 Jebba Street, Ebute-Metta, Lagos State.

The General Manager, LASBCA, Gbolahan Oki, who spoke during the enforcement exercise, commended the efforts of the community leaders, youths, and residents of the areas for cooperating with the enforcement agents of the agency.

Other buildings marked for demolition before the end of the week by LASBCA are located at 37 Coates Street; 3, Ondo Street; 14 Ondo Street; 16 Church Street; 13, Ibadan Street; 3 Simpson Street; 35 Jebba Stree; 11 Jeba Street; and 19 Ibadan Street.

The LASBCA boss explained that the exercise was a proactive step by the agency to prevent the loss of lives and property due to avoidable building collapses.

He said that the move had become imperative to rid the state of inhabitable structures, promote standards, and attain a livable, organised, and sustainable built environment.

“We urge the people to recognise the urgency in this matter as we cannot afford to wait for another building to collapse; because every distressed building is a disaster in waiting,” he said.

“Occupants of distressed buildings will keep asking for more time before they vacate but the truth is that we cannot afford to wait in the matter of life and death,” the LASBCA boss added.

Oki said the agency would no longer tolerate excuses by occupants of distressed buildings, who often cited emotional attachments as putative reasons for not being willing to vacate the distressed structures.

He called on owners/occupiers of distressed buildings within the state to vacate immediately, particularly during the rainy season which is associated with more cases of building collapse.

He urged Lagosians to emulate the cooperation of the youths and residents of Ebute-Metta who liaised with the government by reporting distressed buildings within the area to appropriate government agencies.

The General Secretary, Association of Real Estate Developers of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter, Olumegbon Mutairu, commended the efforts of the state government in ridding the state of distressed buildings.

He promised the continued support of members of the association, especially by providing helpful information about the status of buildings across the state.

An insider revealed how the governor went flat on the floor to beg the godfather when he was told of current happenings but all pleadings didn’t yield a positive response.

The governor was said to have been told to keep to the agreement of one term as it was never on the table that he (governor) would run for a second term.

Now, the governor has been thrown into confusion on how to inform Lagosians and his loyalists that he would not be running and the supposed consensus agreement has collapsed.

As workers are in the mood for the 2022 May Day celebration, four people have been presumed dead while five others were injured on Sunday, on the Third Mainland Bridge, in Lagos.

The accident occurred at about 5.50 am at the Adekunle Inter-change end of the Bridge inward Iyana-Oworo.

Information gathered by 9news Nigeria revealed that the incident occurred when a Toyota Hiace bus with number plate, FST 241 YC (Grey colour), which was journeying at top speed from Adekunle inter-change suffered a tyre burst and capsized.

It was learnt that 20 occupants (Nine males and 11 females) were on board when the incident occurred.

Five of the occupants were said to have sustained injuries while three female adults were confirmed dead on the spot.

The fourth casualty, a female died in the hospital.

Confirming the incident, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC, Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide said the crashed vehicle has been towed off the location.

According to him, men of FRSC, The Nigeria Police, Lagos State Transport Management Authority LASTMA and Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA, were the first responders at the scene who rescued the injured victims and deposited the bodies at the General Hospital Marina.

“The additional female victim died at the Hospital when the FRSC team went for follow-up at General Hospital, Marina,”

He advised motorists to always be mindful of the status of their tyres and avoid excessive speed.

At press time, the crashed vehicle has been taken off the location.

The Sector Commander assured all motorists of adequate deployment of personnel and logistics for the crash-free Eid-El-Fitri celebration on Monday, 2nd May 2022.

He admonished motorists to always adhere to speed limits for all categories of the road at all times because “Speed Thrills but kills faster”.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a new name for the National Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos.

Upon completion, the facility under renovation will be known as Lagos Creative and Entertainment Center.

Information Minister, Lai Mohammed made the disclosure on Tuesday in Madrid, Spain, NAN reports.

He signed an agreement on the hosting of the Global Conference on Cultural Tourism and Creative Industry.

Nigeria and the United Nation World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) sealed the pact at the organisation’s headquarters.

The November 14 to November 17 event would be staged at the newly refursbished edifice.

Mohammed said hubs are being constructed within the premises for fashion, Information, technology, film and music.

With that, the National Theatre is now known as the Lagos Creative and Entertainment Centre.

“The Lagos surface rail system, to serve the National Theatre, will be commissioned ahead of the conference”, he added.

The monument was completed in 1976 in preparation for the Festival of Arts and Culture hosted in 1977.

The renovation costs $100million under a partnership between the Federal Government and the Bankers’ Committee/Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

9news Nigeria reports that the Lagos State Police Command has invited all parties involved in the alleged sexual abuse of a 10-year-old primary six pupil of Chrisland Schools located in the Victoria Garden City area of the state.

This online news platform understands that the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, told The PUNCH on Tuesday that all parties involved in the matter have been directed to report to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, today, Tuesday, April 19, 2022.

Giving an update on the matter, Hundeyin said, “All the parties involved have been invited to the State Criminal Investigation Department Panti today to give a written statement and further questioning will be done.”

The parties involved in the Chrisland School girl video include the school’s headteacher, G.I. Azike; and the parents of the female pupil who alleged that their daughter was sexually abused during the school’s participation in the World School Games at Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Though Chrisland schools management said the female pupil was among 76 pupils that represented the school at the Dubai event, which was held between March 8 and 14, 2022, it said the allegation of rpe was false, noting that the said two pupils of the school engaged in what the school described as “sxual misconduct” in a game called ‘Truth or Dare,’ when the act occurred after lights out.

The school authorities subsequently suspended the female student (name withheld) indefinitely, stating that she was “a major actor” in the “immoral act”. However, the mother of the pupil, in a viral video, claimed that her daughter was drugged and raped by some male students of the school.

Meanwhile, 9news Nigeria reports that the Chrisland Schools’ incident was one of the disheartening cases resulting from bullying and molestations in secondary schools of late.

Last November, Sylvester Oromoni, a 12-year-old boarding student of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial city, reportedly died from injuries sustained after he was allegedly bullied and sexually molested by some senior students of the school.

The Lagos state government has shut down all the branches of Chrisland schools in the state following the viral sex tapes of some students of the school, 9news Nigeria gathered.

In a statement released, the state government says an investigation has been launched into the unfortunate incident. The statement mentioned that criminal allegation as regards the unfortunate incident has also been escalated to the state police.

The state government warned that anyone seen producing, distributing, receiving, or being in possession of child pornography commits an offence and is liable to a custodial sentence of fourteen (14) years.

The statement reads

”The attention of the Lagos State Government has been drawn to the alleged sexual violence case involving students of Chrisland Schools which occurred in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Residents of Fiwakesin, Agric Ikorodu Lagos woke up to the news of the capture of the thieves terrorising the area. For a while, there’s been increasing reports of thieves who specialised in stealing rams and shuttling them to sell in some ram markets around Lagos.

One particular man who spoke on the condition of anonymity rears ram and has been the biggest casualty of their antics.

Efforts had been made to apprehend the thieves to no avail until the early hours of today when they ran out of luck. The news of their capture woke the residents who were very quick to carry out jungle justice on them.

They were beaten, brutalized and left for dead before being handed over to the notorious ELÉLÉ; the CDA security outfit.

At the time of filing this report, the identity of the said thieves are yet to be fully ascertained. But they’re rumoured to be residents of Fiwakesin where they carried out their crimes.

As part of its promise to make education a major pillar in the building of a greater Lagos State, the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has launched The Lagos State Comprehensive Schools Programme.

According to Folashade Adefisayo, the Lagos State Commissioner for Education, the programme is basically a response to the high number of students dropping out of the public secondary school system in the state: “We noticed a heavy attrition rate among our senior secondary school students.”, she explains, “Many were not resuming in SS1, after JS3, and even throughout Secondary Schools, there was a steady reduction in enrolment.”

Statistics show that for every 10 students enrolled in JS1, only 3 make it to SS3, with just 1 student eventually graduating. Many of the dropouts get into informal vocational training and street-level hawking and trading-related activities, exposing them to social vices and crime. The programme, Adefisayo insists, offers such students an option: “Instead of going into low-level training, stay with us and we’ll give you first-class training in vocational skills in the safe, controlled environment school provides.”

Above and beyond addressing the school dropout situation in the state, the programme is a model that is designed to unlock the unique intellectual competency of each student and is suited to their intelligence profile and local context. “In reality, there are many levels of measuring intelligence and how people learn.”, Peter Bankole, Chairman of the overall planning committee for the programme, iterates, “We aim to make Lagos the state of choice when it comes to employability and support for students going through the programme.”

The programme itself employs a two-pronged approach of general academic and vocational education. The vocational training begins in earnest at the resumption of Senior Secondary School and runs through its three-year duration. It covers five broad subject categories in the pilot phase; Agriculture, Tech and Digital skills, Beauty and Events, Building and Construction, and Media and Entertainment. “The students will have access to hands-on training that incorporates technology.”, Ayopeju Njideaka, Chairman, Curriculum Sub-Committee for Lagos Comprehensive Schools reveals, “In addition to learning skills in agriculture, fashion designing, software development, film-making and others, they will be taught financial literacy, entrepreneurship, communication, marketing and sales, and digital literacy, to enhance their employability and economic independence.”

What sets the programme apart from the already-existing technical colleges in the state is the ease of access offered to students. Instead of the rigours of trying to enrol in colleges in relatively distant locations as Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe, (acronymed as IBILE), “The programme offers the chance to remain within the formal academic structure and obtain training similar to that in the technical colleges.”, says Abayomi Abolaji, Permanent Secretary in the Lagos State Ministry of Education.

“The pilot phase has commenced in 12 schools across Lagos’ 6 Education Districts (2 schools per district). District 1; Alimosho Senior High School in Alimosho and Dairy Farm Secondary School in Agege. District 2; Majidun Senior High School in Ikorodu and Angus Memorial College, Igbobi. District 3; Ogunmodede Senior College in, Epe and Wahab Folawiyo Senior High School, Ikoyi. District 4; Lagos City Senior College, Sabo, Yaba and Government College Eric Moore, Surulere. District 5; Bola Ige Millenium Senior Secondary School in Ajeromi-Ifelodun and Ajara Comprehensive High School in Badagry. For the last district (6), we have Birch Freeman High School Mushin and Ijeshatedo Grammar School, Okota/Isolo. We hope to expand to 50 by September 2022, with the ultimate goal of establishing the programme in every public secondary school in the state.” Abolaji concluded.

Regarding the sustainability of the programme, Adefisayo says legal documentation is ongoing but believes the critical involvement of the private sector alongside communities and other relevant parties, will foster accountability, and the durability of the Lagos State Comprehensive Schools Programme.

“It is education that provides credible, multiple pathways to life skills; to give the student a job for life, a career for life and a living for life.”

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has refuted reports on the purported appointment of Musiliu Akinsanya a.k.a. MC Oluomo.

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) suspended him as the Lagos Chairman on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the sanctioned leader announced that he and the state chapter were breaking away from the body.

Oluomo urged Sanwo-Olu to appoint a Management Committee to oversee the operations of parks.

On Friday, information emerged that Akinsanya has been named the head of Lagos Transport Parks and Garages Management Committee.

Reacting, Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu’s Chief Press Secretary debunked the news.

“Please disregard post(s) claiming that Gov @jidesanwoolu has appointed suspended Chairman of NURTW, MC Oluomo as GM, Lagos Transport Parks and Garages committee”, he tweeted.

The spokesman noted that the statement by Information Commissioner, Gbenga Omotoso, remains the government’s position.

The Lagos Police Rapid Response Squad have arrested three members of a traffic robbery gang in the Agege area of the state, 9News Nigeria learnt.

The suspects identified as Ridwan Imran (20), Lukman Abiodun (18) and Abdulahi Isa (18) were arrested on Tuesday night, January 19 2022 after they attacked a pedestrian known as Yusuph Ahmed.

9News Nigeria learnt that the robbers had smashed a bottle on Yusuph Ahmed’s head before dispossessing him of his one hundred thousand Naira (₦100,000), three mobile phones and a wristwatch.

According to a police statement, the incident happened around 9 pm on Tuesday, 19th January 2022. The report also stated that the police squad were not able to apprehend three other members of the traffic robbery gang.

The statement read;

“The suspects harassed and chased him to Agege Stadium, smashed a bottled on his head, pushed him inside the drainage and dispossessed him of a hundred thousand naira, three mobile phones and a wristwatch all estimated at over N600,000.

“The Commander, Rapid Response Squad, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, who intercepted a distress call from the area about traffic robbery, directed the Decoy Team to the scene where three of the principal suspects were chased and arrested while others escaped.

“Preliminary investigations by the team resulted in the recovery of one of the victim’s three mobile phones from where it was hidden.”

Recounting his ordeal, the victim said;

“I was summoned by one of my customers, who had given me N100,000:00 to refurbish a Sienna car. I got to Isheri – Berger Garage where they (pointing to Ridwan Imran and Lukman Abiodun) ordered me to give them money for food.

“I pleaded with them that I had no money on me. Within a twinkle of an eye, they mobilized their colleagues, apparently lurking around.

“They were about six in number. I had to flee. They chased me from Isheri – Berger Garage to Agege stadium. They beat me ceaselessly and broke a bottle on my head.

“I was lucky, their leaders were arrested right there by RRS men. It was as if God answered my prayers. I had given up hope of surviving it”

Commander of Rapid Response Squad, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi assured the victim that all the suspects involved in the robbery would be brought to book, emphasizing that those who are not prepared to earn a living legitimately would have a tough time living in Lagos.

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) will January 10 commence a three-day warning strike.

Speaking during a press conference on Friday, the chairperson for NANNM Lagos Council, Olurotimi Awojide, lamented the poor health care system in the state.

“Nurses will no longer bear the burden of a poorly-resourced health care system,” Mr Awojide said, urging the public to see the strike as a fight for a better healthcare system.

“All the requests we have made from the state government are to ensure that more nurses are not driven into the frustration that can lead them to leave the service,’’ he said.

Stating that the association’s state executive council meeting, held December 29, 2021, Mr Awojide said the numerous challenges of nurses and all unresolved issues were tabled before the government.

He, however, lamented that despite engagements, the government has yet to respond to the association’s challenges.

“In our estimation, the state government has yet to fully come to terms with how incredibly challenging the situation in the health sector has been for our members, especially since 2020,’’ he said.

Mr Awojide noted that the association’s requests to the state government included: resolving the shortage of nurses and midwives and retention of incentives to arrest the turnover rate.

Others, he said, were proper consolidation of CONHESS Salary Structure and improved working conditions.

Mr Awojide stressed that the continued attrition of nurses to foreign countries had led to an acute shortage in the staffing of health facilities.

According to him, 496 nurses left the service of the State Health Service Commission from 2019 to 2021, with less than 15 per cent arising from statutory retirement.

“For context, the commission has only about 2,350 nurses.

“More than 200 nurses left the service of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital within the same period.

“Over 80 have left the Primary Healthcare Board from 2020 till date, thus leaving the healthcare with 700 nurses and midwives,’’ he said.

Suspected hoodlums have attacked and killed a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in FESTAC Town, in the Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Our correspondent gathered that the victim, Pastor Babatunde Dada, was killed inside the RCCG Chapel of Resurrection on 13 Road, 6th Avenue, FESTAC Town.

The killing, which happened on Thursday, December 2, was said to have been perpetrated by two new converts who came to the church for the first time a Sunday before the incident.

The two youths were said to have come out during an altar call and surrendered their lives to Jesus.

The church accommodated them on its premises after they claimed to be stranded.

They had barely spent a week in the church when they reportedly stabbed the cleric to death.

However, the wife of the pastor, Bose, told our correspondent on the phone that she called her husband on the day of the incident and he promised to come home to rest.

She said, “My husband was killed on December 2 at the church. He was the admin/accounts officer, as well as the parish pastor. I was not with him when he was killed, but I was told that they collected money from him. I heard that those who killed him were new converts.”

A family member, who is also a security expert, Mr Abolarinwa Olatunbosun, told our correspondent on Wednesday that the pastor was killed after withdrawing money from a bank.

He said, “The pastor went to a bank to withdraw some money and went to rest on the first floor of the church. Two persons said to be new converts went to meet him upstairs, broke his head and killed him.

“The matter was reported to the police and one of the suspects, who ran to Ilorin, has been arrested.”

Olatunbosun said the killing might be for ritual purposes, adding that the assailants were suspected Internet fraudsters, aka Yahoo boys.
The expert said criminals were beginning to attack churches and pastors because they believed there was money in church.

He advised religious centres to be security conscious and put in place strategies that could stop criminals from killing, kidnapping and robbing leaders and worshippers.

A friend of the slain pastor, Fred Enemigin, who is the founder, Highflyers International, Lagos, said in a Facebook post that the pastor was stabbed multiple times.

He wrote, “Two boys had come to church last Sunday and they responded to the altar call by giving their lives to Christ. After church service, they waited to see the head pastor and told him that they were stranded without any place to stay.

“On compassionate grounds, the pastor allowed them to stay somewhere within the church premises pending when they would be resettled. Pastor Tunde Dada, who had for almost a decade been the accountant of RCCG Chapel of Resurrection Parish, was assigned to provide needed welfare for the boys until their matter would be sorted.

“On the fateful Thursday, Tunde was seated in his office and the boys targeting that they were alone on the church premises with him, entered his office and attacked him with knives and other sharp weapons. He was stabbed multiple times and places until they had him killed right there on the spot.

“Our minds are still searching for what the rift between the boys and Tunde was considering the fact that the Tunde we knew was a very gentle soul. Could they have asked for more welfare than what was approved for them and Tunde declined? What on earth would warrant this brutal killing by those who were recipients of a server of the church’s benevolence? There are many more questions that we have not found answers to.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, said he had yet to be briefed about the case.

The Lagos State government on Wednesday suspended the ongoing first term examination at the Bab Fafunwa Millennium School, Ojodu, formerly Ojodu Grammar School, until January 2022.

Pupils of the school took to the streets to protest the death of their mates.

An articulated truck crushed many of the pupils on their way home from school on Tuesday.

President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with the families of those affected.

A statement by presidential spokesman Femi Adesina reads in part: “President Buhari condoles with government and people of Lagos State and the authorities of Ojodu Grammar School over the sad and painful loss of the promising lives that were cut short in the tragic incident.

“He prays that the Almighty God will comfort the grieving parents and relations at this very difficult time, and grant the injured quick recovery.”

The exact number of those who died remains conflicting, but sources at the school said three pupils died.

The accident occurred at the Grammar School Bus Stop, Ogunnusi Road, along Ogba-Ojodu/Berger axis.

The truck driver was said to have been trying to evade arrest by Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) and men of the Lagos State Transport Management Agency (LASTMA) from Berger Division, Ikeja when he rammed into the pupils by the roadside.

Parents and guardians on Wednesday stormed the school in protest.

They demanded to take their children and wards home.

Some said the school should not have opened Wednesday.

A man identified as Ladeji Kelvin Babatunde shown in the picture below was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission EFCC a few moments ago for impersonating the agency to DEFRAUD a suspected online Yahoo boy in Lagos State NIGERIA.

According to a post on the EFCC’s official page, the defendant allegedly impersonated officers of the Commission and obtained the sum of money by false pretence from the suspected cybercriminals.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Lagos Zonal Command, however, arrested the said Ladeji Kelvin Babatunde for allegedly obtaining over N38million from suspected internet fraudsters in order to prevent their arrest by the Commission.

It has been confirmed that the defendant allegedly impersonated officers of the Commission and obtained the sum of money by false pretence from the suspected cybercriminals.

Upon his arrest, a four-bedroom uncompleted apartment located at Ikola Road, Alagbado, Lagos, which was developed with the proceeds of the perpetrated fraud, was recovered from him.

The fake anti-graft agent is cooling off in the EFCC custody for further investigation and possible prosecution to serve as a deterrent to other fake NIGERIANS who parade themselves in various fields to DEFRAUD the public.

It was indeed a black and bloody Tuesday when some uniformed men of the Nigerian military unofficially invaded the popular Ladipo market in the Mushin local government area of Lagos state leaving scores injured and two dead.

In an amateur video seen by 9News Nigeria, the military men who paraded the market with guns and a military van were shooting sporadically in the open crowded market packed with mostly Igbo traders.

The traders were seen shouting and scampering for safety while the military men continued firing gunshots indiscriminately. One man was seen lying in the pool of his own blood. Some of the traders were seen carrying one of the men shot by the soldiers and calling out for a motorcycle taxi probably in the bid to rush the wounded man to the hospital

It was gathered that one of the traders shot dead known as “Scatter” was the PRO of the Ladipo traders association.

According to a voice heard from the video, the soldiers invaded the market in the claim that they bought a vehicle engine that was bad some months ago.

In a private investigation of the incident, 9News Nigeria later gathered that a man who supposedly was a member of the Nigerian Airforce had made a purchase of a car engine from a Ladipo trader and it turned out that the engine was not functional. The supposed military man returned the engine and demanded for a refund but was denied the refund over some arguments. In the process of pressing for his case fight broke out between him and the trader which made the military man to leave in anger. The military man then on Tuesday 13th July 2021 came back with some other armed military men on a Hilux Van with OP MESSA inscription on it.

The governor of Lagos state last night x-rayed his efforts in the chase of the dreaded Covid-19 pandemic in Lagos state NIGERIA having stated the update of his Government to give Lagosians the best governance needed.

It has become imperative to once again provide you with an update on the Coronavirus pandemic situation in Lagos State, and our ongoing response as a State Government.

Starting around the end of March 2021, the second wave of the COVID19 pandemic in Lagos State began to wind down, and we began to enjoy some reprieve from the worst effects of the virus.

This allowed us to further open up the economy to allow the start of the journey towards full normalcy in our lives and the pursuit of livelihoods, after what has been a very difficult year.

Regrettably, in spite of the hard work and dedicated efforts towards sustaining the return to normalcy, over the last three months, we are now finding ourselves at what appears to be the start of a potential 3rd wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, in Lagos State.

From the beginning of July, we started to experience a steep increase in the number of daily confirmed cases, with the test positivity rate going from 1.1% at the end of June 2021 to its current rate of 6.6% as at the 8th of July 2021. The rapid increase within a week gives great cause for concern. Also, within the last two weeks, the occupancy rate at our 2 isolation centres increased from an average of 1% to 6%.

This is the new and disturbing reality that now confronts us. But we must not be demoralized by this. We must instead resolve that we will not leave any stone unturned in our bid to effectively mitigate the third wave of this pandemic in Lagos State. As you all know, Lagos has been the epicentre of the pandemic since the start, and the way we manage it here has a significant impact and reverberating effect on the national outlook and outcomes. So, Nigeria is counting on us in Lagos State to be resolute in our stand against the virus. We will continue to test aggressively. We will also focus on sequencing the samples we are collecting to ensure we are detecting and keeping track of the different variants in circulation. It is only by testing and sequencing comprehensively that we can collect the data required for informed decision-making.

As at the 7th of July 2021, Lagos State had recorded a total of 60,202 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Of this number, 55,135 have recovered in-community and 770 are currently being managed actively

Over the course of managing the COVID-19 pandemic, about 4,382 patients have been admitted into our various COVID-19 care centres in Lagos: with 357 registered fatalities. We have tested 563,679 samples in Lagos State since the pandemic started.

Today we have 30 accredited testing centres: 26 private and 4 public health laboratories in the State, a significant improvement in capacity over the course of the past year.

Let me make it clear that outside of the health facilities accredited for the management and treatment of COVID-19, and the EKOTELEMED program, no other health facilities, whether public or private, are permitted to admit or attend to COVID-19 patients. The Lagos State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) is providing monitoring and surveillance and has been mandated to apply heavy fines and other punitive measures on all facilities found to be in violation of this.

Lagosians should desist from patronizing non-accredited COVID-19 treatment centres, and proprietors should also ensure that all suspected and confirmed cases are referred appropriately.

One of the major tenets of our mitigation strategy against the 3rd wave is our vaccination campaign, similar to other parts of the world. It has been observed by various credible studies that those that have received their vaccines have demonstrated significant resistance to the effects of the virus, with fewer associated complications and deaths.

As of today, however, the percentage of residents of Lagos who have received two (2) doses of the vaccine stands at a mere 1%. We recognise that this is not adequate, and given the imminent third wave, and our priority to reduce COVID-19 related deaths, we are exploring all avenues possible to ramp up access to vaccination so as to reach our herd immunity target of at least 60% COVID-19 vaccination coverage of the population of Lagos State. We are confident that we will be getting a second batch of vaccines very soon, to kick-start the second phase of vaccinations.

Between 8th May 2021 and 7th July 2021, a total of 50,322 passengers of interest arrived in Lagos via the Murtala Mohammed Airport. Of the 50,322 passengers, 18 per cent could not be reached by EKOTELEMED because of the provision of either wrong numbers or wrong Nigerian contact details to be reached on. It is the responsibility of passengers to ensure they provide the right details for us to reach them for proper monitoring.

Going forward, passengers that do not provide the right details, including a phone number they can be reached for monitoring and an address for isolation, will face serious sanctions including fines and imprisonment according to our Lagos State Coronavirus Law of 2021. Sanctions Against Quarantine Defaulters.

As dictated by the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 (PSC), passengers from red-listed countries (India, South Africa, Brazil and Turkey) are required to observe mandatory isolation.

The following sanctions are being recommended and have already been meted out to defaulters:

● For Foreigners: Revocation of their Permanent Residency, and deportation

● For Nigerians: Prosecution to the full extent of the Lagos State COVID-19 Law.

Greater vigilance is required at this time in our churches and mosques and other places of religious worship. Even as we are pleased that religious houses are now open for worship, after the lengthy closures of 2020, we must not allow ourselves to be carried away by the illusion that all is now back to normal. This is especially critical, as Sallah approaches, in a little over a week from now. The festivities will no doubt bring people together in large numbers and create conditions that can sadly cause the spread of the Coronavirus. We must not allow this to happen.

For this reason, we are mandating full compliance with all protective protocols. Compulsory use of masks in all public places, Social distancing, Temperature checks, Provisions for hand-washing and sanitisers, and a maximum of 50 per cent occupancy in enclosed spaces.

Whilst both the Federal and State Governments have a huge role to play in the management of the COVID-19 pandemic, the responsibility of managing the third wave ultimately belongs to all of us.

Without the cooperation of the public at large, we stand the risks of losing both lives and livelihood, on a devastating scale. Therefore, I would like to once again reiterate that this is not the time to get tired or complacent. Instead, we must be re-energized to battle this invisible and seemingly relentless enemy. After almost 18 months of daily confronting this virus, it is understandable that many are tired and want their old, pre-pandemic lives to return.

Unfortunately, we do not have a choice in this regard, and fatigue is not an option. We cannot afford to be tired, frustrated or distracted. The enemy is formidable – and opportunistic. It will only go as far as we allow it. Having triumphed over the first and second waves of the pandemic, we must now find within ourselves new reserves of energy to quell this emerging third wave before it snowballs out of control.

Let me assure us all that victory over COVID-19 is much closer today than at any other point in our recent history. But we must persevere to see this victory. We must maintain our vigilance even as we ramp up the vaccination coverage.

At this point, I would like to thank all the members of the Incident Command Structure for their resilience in the management of this neverending pandemic, and also the Federal Government, through the Presidential Steering Committee, for all their support and collaboration.

Lagos State will continue to work with all our partners, across government and the private sector, to ensure that we permanently triumph over this virus.

This time around, Governor BABAJIDE SANWO- OLU is fulfilling his promise to compensate residents affected by the recent demolition of properties to expand Ikorodu road in Lagos state of NIGERIA.

However, the lagos state government has dolled out a cheque of 3.1m naira compensation to a seasoned Nigeria actor, BABATUNDE OMIDINA, aka Baba Suwe.

This is a compensation for his demolished property to expand the IGBOGBO-IGBE road in Ikorodu lagos state.

However, the actor Expressed happiness that his building was not demolished without compensation as some governors do.

He said that the compensation will give him a new house at his choice location while thanking governor Sanwo-olu for keeping to his words in the Governance of such a big state.

LAGOS is indeed working.

The Lagos State Police command has arrested 31 armed robbery suspects during a raid at some criminal hideouts in Ajegunle, a border town between Lagos and Ogun states.

The police said the robbers had converted some places deep inside the forest at the border town into a safe haven.

They also said the robbers hid some kidnapped victims there while awaiting ransom payment.

On a telephone chat with 9News Nigeria, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu, said the raid was in continuation of the command’s plan to rid the state of criminals and cultists.

The police Commissioner hinted that the command’s Strike Team, in conjunction with the local vigilante groups in the Ikorodu axis, between Friday and Sunday, raided some criminals’ hideouts at Ikorodu, Imota and Agbowa and arrested Hoodlums.

He said during the raid, about 28 suspected cultists and armed robbers were arrested.

He said the same squad stormed a forest, which has been identified as a hideout for suspected cultists and armed robbers at Ajegunle.

“The hoodlums engaged the squad in a gun duel before three of the suspected armed robbers were arrested.

“Two locally-made double-barrel guns, four live cartridges, some expended cartridges and two Bajaj motorcycles were recovered from the suspects.

“The case is under investigation at the Command’s Strike Team, Ikeja” he added

This is inline with the recent development of Insecurity in the country and pleaded with every state command to effect actions to curb crime.

The former SLG, Ojokoro LCDA, Hon. Johnson Akanbi Adeshina Are has commended the good job of the Lagos State Governor, His Excellency, Mr Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu in ensuring that the Agege Pen-Cinema Flyover bridge and the five other adjoining roads were completed and commissioned on Friday, March 5, 2021.

“This Mega-City project will ease traffic grid-lock in that axis”, he affirmed.

While speaking with 9News Nigeria, he noted that the wild jubilation that rocked Agege and its environs over the commissioning of the dual carriage flyover along with the other network of roads for public use is a loud affirmation of Lagosians’ deep sense of gratitude and appreciation for this great landmark which will definitely bring a great relief to road users in that axis.

Akanbi Are, popularly known as A1 by his teeming admirers, described the project as another milestone infrastructural achievement of Sanwo-Olu’s administration to support businesses, promote economic development and ultimately improve the socio-economic well-being of Lagosians.

While commending the giant strides of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in the State, Adeshina assures lagosians that more infrastructural developments are in the pipeline as dividends of democracy.

… Intensifies Inspection of Bottled, Sachet Water Facilities

The Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission (LSWRC) has sealed some production factories engaged in packaged water production for falling short of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

Executive Secretary of LSWRC, Mrs. Funke Adepoju, in a statement issued on Tuesday, said the level of poor and unwholesome practices discovered in some water factories in the State were not only disheartening but frightening.

She said as the regulatory body empowered by law to enforce standards, the LSWRC would not fold its arms and watch some individuals put the lives of residents in jeopardy on account of economic gains, and that every necessary effort would be mustered to protect the people from consuming unwholesome water.   

Mrs. Adepoju said, “Yes, we are not all out to hound businesses. On the contrary, we want water producers to do business and thrive. However, in doing business, safety procedures and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) must be strictly observed”.

Disclosing that enforcement operations were carried out at some water production factories in the State with on-site testing kits, the Executive Secretary said the result confirmed that most of them operated far below safety parameters.

“As the regulatory body empowered by Section 313 (h) of the Lagos State Environmental Management Protection Law, 2017, to regulate the activities of those engaged in the provision, consumption, treatment, packaging, sales and supply of bottled drinking water contained in bottles or polythene bags, our principal interest is to ensure acceptable standards”, she stated.    

While vowing that the enforcement exercise would be intensified and sustained, Adepoju noted that the Commission is working with relevant stakeholders such as the Association of Water Producers (ATWAP) and Water Producers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN), among others, to enforce standards.

She said the sealed facilities would remain shut until the owners of such factories strictly comply with all safety procedures and duly register for further monitoring in order to facilitate compliance with best practices in future. 

Adepoju urged residents to report any water production factory in their neighbourhood that is suspected to engage in unwholesome practices to the Commission for appropriate action, emphasising the need for people to key into the Safe Water Campaign of the Commission and work with the government to protect residents. 

“Water producers, beverage producers, bottling companies and operators in the water abstraction and production industry must come to terms with the fact that the LSWRC would not shy away from strictly enforcing regulatory provisions in the bid to ensure residents consume only safe and hygienic water”, the Executive Secretary said.

… As Commissioner for Health Inspects Two General Hospitals Undergoing Renovation

In line with the current administration’s medical infrastructure blueprint strategy which is aimed at revamping health facilities and make them fit for purpose, the Lagos State Government has commenced phased refurbishment and renovation of all general hospitals in the State.

The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, who disclosed this today after a facility inspection tour of two secondary health facilities, Ebute Metta and Harvey Road Health Centres, that have been approved for refurbishment in Y2021, noted that the refurbishment and renovation strategy which commenced last year would address the issues of design faults, drainage, patient flow, staff flow, water collection, infection prevention compliance or non-compliance, energy and ventilation.

He said: “Mr. Governor already knows the state of the General Hospitals and his mandate is that we do a deep refurbishment in all the general hospitals and bring them all up to the standard that is acceptable globally. Instead of repairing the general hospitals in little pieces every year, we are coming to a number of hospitals every year to do a complete refurbishing so that by the time we finish, it will look like a brand new hospital. We intend to refurbish between six-eight hospitals in a year”.

Abayomi noted that eight hospitals have been earmarked for deep refurbishment in Y2021 in addition to the ones started last year, adding that the refurbishment and renovation project would also focus on bringing down the carbon footprints in the medical infrastructure and embracing renewable energy like solar, inverters and natural ventilators.

“We are trying to keep the hospitals on low energy and low carbon footprints; we don’t want the Medical Directors to spend their IGR on diesel and fueling Generators. So, where we can cool a building down naturally and use renewable energy like solar or natural ventilators or inverters, we would do that just to bring down the carbon footprints of all our medical infrastructure and reduce the use of fossil fuel and generally, redesign the building or rehabilitate it to be a lot cooler, among others”, he said.

He disclosed that repair and the refurbishment would be carried out in such a way that it would not allow for major repairs in another decade except for continuous maintenance that would be done by the hospital management in collaboration with the Lagos State Infrastructure and Asset  Maintenance Agency (LASIAMA).

The Commissioner averred that the State government has embarked on some Greenfield medical infrastructure projects to prevent issues noticed in health infrastructure across all levels of care in the State, stressing that all issues bedevilling medical health infrastructure will disappear when Governor Sanwo-Olu’s Medical Infrastructure Blueprint strategy is rolled out.

His words: “With the ongoing refurbishment and roll out of the Governor’s medical infrastructure blueprint, the medical infrastructure landscape of the State would look completely different. Our attention would focus on maintenance because there is no point coming in doing a deep refurbishment only to allow it to disintegrate afterwards”.

“Once we have done a deep refurbishment, we have an agency that is responsible for maintenance and they are part of the refurbishment strategy and once we finish, then we are going to have what we call a maintenance culture to make sure the infrastructure does not suffer dilapidation due to neglect. All the engineers on-site would focus on maintenance and LASIAMA would come in and set up a facility the management programme and make sure the deep refurbishment done is adequately maintained”, the Commissioner said.

A civil rights organisation, the Save Lagos Group (SLG) has expressed reservations on the activities of personnel of the Lagos State judiciary over series of confirmed underhand dealings with some unscrupulous members of the state’s bar associations.

Specifically, the group accused personnel of the Lagos State judiciary of being ‘heavily” involved in a racketeering ring where eviction orders are procured against hapless and unknown tenants by some landlords through their corrupt lawyers practicing in the state.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Monday, the Convener of Save Lagos Group (SLG), Comrade Adeniyi A. Sulaiman stated that the situation has become so worrisome that relevant authorities should step in order to restore sanity in the system if the state is to regain its credibility in the country.

The group added that the corruption in the state’s judicial system has become so deep that if left unattended to is capable of throwing the state into chaos and that the only way to restore sanity is for both the state government and the anti-graft agencies as well as professional bodies to consider a comprehensive forensic inquest into that arm of government in Lagos State.

“We are very worry with the spate of unwholesome practices in the Lagos State judiciary, especially with the ease with which unscrupulous landlords and their corrupt and lawless lawyers in connivance with the similarly corrupt judges and magistrates procure illegal eviction orders against unsuspecting members of the public.” Sulaiman on behalf of the Save Lagos Group wrote.

The group made specific reference to an order granted by an Ikeja Division of the Magistrate Court holden at Ogba for a summon of possession on a Lagos tenant, Mr. Olasesan Olabayo (+2348028740439 & +2348146263798) on a property located on 81, Candos Road, Baruwa, Ipaja, Lagos as an example of sharp practices being carried out by the judiciary and lawyers against citizens of the state.

“A copy of the summon seen by us showed that though Olabayo was the affected tenant in the case but the summon which was endorsed by the office of the registrar of the court was meant to be served on another individual named James Okekwe who is said to be living in the same premises.

“What means is that another person has been representing Olabayo during the past proceedings of the court, a clear case of fraud and violation of extant laws guiding the administrative procedures of judicial proceedings in the state.” The group wrote.

According to the group, the fraud is being carried out by a lawyer, Prince Adekunle Ajasa (+2348033289935 & +2348089839115), the Principal Partner at Winners Chambers located at Block 526, Flat 2, Abesan Housing Estate, Ipaja, Lagos whom it (the group) had in the past accused severally of being a bad example of what a legal officer should be in terms of his conduct just as the group raised an alarm that the purported sitting of the court is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 26^th of January, 2021 (which is tomorrow) at the Samuel Ilori Court Complex, holden at Ogba, under Ikeja Magisterial District.

Sulaiman had on behalf of the group accused Ajasa of procuring a fake eviction order against Olabayo who he had planned to remove from his current abode on December 28, 2020 through that ‘Jankara’ order but the move failed due to the intervention of Save Lagos Group (SLG) who raised an alarm late last year.

The group stated that a similar case occurred where another lawyer, Ifeji Okechukwu Charles (+2348056260750 & +2347038508681) of Chancery Law Firm located at 71, Rasaki Balogun Street, Surulere, Lagos obtained a fake order from the Magistrate Court of Lagos State in the Apapa Magisterial District, Holden at Court 2, Apapa, Lagos presided over Mrs. O. M Ajayi on 23^rd of May, 2018.

“In this case also, a tenant Mr. Etop James Abel  (+2348062476686 & +2348179884880) who was residing on Plot 4, Site H, FHA (DTN), Satellite Town was illegally ejected from his abode by Ifeji who was acting on the instruction of his client, who is a landlord to the victim, Mr. Patrick C. Obiekie (+2348037195560) who had obtained the fake order in connivance with the court.”

He stated that the intervention of the Save Lagos Group, the late Abubakar Tsav led Human Rights Defenders and Advocacy Centre in conjunction with Barrister Chioma Ufondu prompted men of the State CID, Panti of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to launch a detailed investigation into the case.

“We are very happy that the state commissioner of police, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu has instructed that the matter be thoroughly investigated by the men of the state’s CID in Panti, Yaba. The case is being handled by an Investigating Police Officer, named Rotimi (+2348037806460) who hasn’t lived up to our expectations.” He said.

The third case is that of Miss Labake Oyelami  (+2348023862294 or +2347041838078) who is currently living at House 30, S Close, 23 Road, Festac Town Lagos who has been subjected to undue harassment by her landlord who doubles as lawyer, Mr. Okwudili Alagbu (+2347061144999 and +2348023234432) on her despite the fact that her rent and quit notice dated 31^st of October, 2020 is expected to lapse on April 30^th , 2021.

“From all the information available to us, Alagbu who had been parading him as the landlord alongside his wife and children had initially made attempts to eject her in December but were later arrested by officers of the Festac Police Station, where Oyelami had gone to report them when the harassment became very unbearable.

“We are happy that men of the Festac Police Station have stepped into the matter through the Investigating Police Officer, Inspector Caroline (+2348030441834), yet they (the Alagbus) have never relented in their persistent threat to her life. We are also using this platform to state that no harm must befall her or else, the Alagbu family would he held liable.” The group wrote.

The group has now resolved to call on relevant organizations in the judiciary such as the Body of Benchers, Legal Practitioners Privilege Committee, Council of Legal Education, Legal Practitioners’ Regulatory Committee, Legal Practitioners’ Practicing Council to activate disciplinary measures to checkmate sharp practices of lawyers in the state using the instrumentality of the Legal Practitioners’ Act.

The group also called on the National Judicial Council as well as the Economic, Financial and other Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Police Special Fraud Unit (SFU)and the Directorate of State Security Services (DSS) to beam their searchlights on the Lagos State Judiciary to save hapless residents of the state from needless embarrassment from their landlords.

Shops and valuable goods were on Sunday damaged when fire gutted the Ketu Plank Market, Lagos State on Sunday.

The Lagos State Emergency Management confirmed the incident, adding that no life was lost.

The Director-General of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the cause of the fire incident could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

He said, “Emergency responders comprising of LASEMA Response Team and the Lagos State Fire Service have curtailed the raging inferno at Ketu Plank Market on Demurin Street, Ketu, Lagos.

“The cause of the fire incident which reportedly started from one part of the market is yet to be ascertained, however, it is evident that there is extensive damage with valuable goods having been destroyed by the fire.

“Fortunately, no lives were lost in the inferno which has been brought under control and dampened down.”

In another part of Lagos, Oke-Osanyintolu said LASEMA Response Unit recovered a trailer conveying a 40ft container that ran over a culvert at Mile 2 inward Kirikri earlier on Sunday.

He added, “Investigation by the LRT determined that the accident was a result of a mechanical error (brake failure) of the trailer.

“No loss of life, nor injuries were recorded in the incident where the LRT, LASTMA, and men of the Nigerian Police were responders.

“The affected Trailer has been evacuated off the road to a layby with aid of the agency’s heavy-duty equipment.”

* Urges Sanwo-Olu to caution errant judges, magistrates who grant an illegal eviction order

A civil rights organisation, the Save Lagos Group (SLG) has expressed its readiness to drag two Lagos based lawyers, Adekunle Ajasa and Okwudili Alagbu before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) for engaging in what the group termed ‘unprofessional and unethical conduct’.

A statement issued in Lagos on Thursday signed by the Convener of the Save Lagos Group, Comrade Adeniyi Alimi Sulaiman, specifically accused the two legal practitioners of procuring illegal eviction order to remove tenants of their clients from their abode.   

This is coming just as Sulaiman on behalf of the Save Lagos Group called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo and the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Kazeem Alogba to beam their searchlights on the activities of personnel in the state’s judiciary to curb rising wave of illegal eviction of unsuspecting tenants from their abodes in the state.

The position of the Save Lagos Group came as a result of the plights of two tenants, Mr. Olusesan Olabayo (+2348028740439 or +2348146263798) who is a tenant in a two bedroom flat located at 81, Candos Street, Baruwa Inside, Ipaja, Lagos and Miss Labake Oyelami (+2348023862294 or +2347041838078) who is currently living at House 30, S Close, 23 Road, Festac Town Lagos.

Commenting on the plight of the affected tenants, the group described them as the latest in the series of a well organized and elaborate scheme involving lawyers and personnel attached to the state’s judiciary, who are fond of producing and procuring illegal eviction order in the absence of their tenants.

“We are aware that the practice of obtaining court eviction order in the absence of the affected tenants has been ongoing for some time, we didn’t take cognizance of it until we came in contact with the affected people recently who narrated their harrowing experience in the hands of their Sherlock landlords and their crocked lawyers.” The group wrote.

The group expressed its worries by the fact that the scheme is being carried out by lawyers and judges whose profession is deemed by the general public as noble and honourable.

“We are urging the relevant authorities such as Governor Babajide Sanwoolu, the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo as well as the Chief Judge, Justice Kazeem Alogba to step in and restore order to stem the tide of fragrant abuse and violation of extant laws relating to relationship between tenants and landlords in the state.” The group wrote.

Sulaiman on behalf of the group further stated that Olabayo recently told him that the lawyer to his landlord, Mr. Reuben Wale Oloyede (+16787481998); Mr. Adekunle Ajasa (+2348033289935) had told him that he has procured an eviction order from an unnamed Magistrate Court in Ogba to evict him from his current abode on December 28, 2020.

“From all indications and from our findings, there was no court process served on Olabayo who was never a part of any process that led to the procurement of the judgment or court order as being claimed by Ajasa. We are also not aware of anytime when he (Olabayo) appeared at the court to present his case but to our surprise, Ajasa is brandishing an order, which lacks any basis but fake.” The group wrote.

According to the group, Ajasa has refused to produce a copy of the said order but has continually harassed Olabayo, saying that was the same scenario that led to the eviction of a former tenant in the same building, Mr. John Sunny who was illegally evicted by Ajasa, which is being repeated.

The group is further urging the state government to beam it’s searchlight on the activities of personnel attached to the Chief Magistrate Court in Ogba, saying the Save Lagos Group had reacted to a similar situation involving Citizens’ Mediation Centre when a lawyer, Mr. Augustine Egharevba of Ferriswheels Chambers who acted as counsel to the landlord, Mr. B.A Ibiyemi of 13, Yussuf Onifade Street, Baruwa-inside in Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA against a former tenant of the same address, Pastor Adebayo Kehinde.

He stated that respite came the way of Kehinde via a petition issued by the Save Lagos Group dated Monday, November, 19^th, 2018 addressed to the state governor, the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General as well as the director, Citizens’ Mediation Centre against the Igando-Ikotun LCDA office on behalf of Mrs. O.A Odusanya who was then the director of the centre.

On the plight of Oyelami, the group lamented undue harassment by her landlord and his lawyer, Mr. Alagbu (+2347061144999 and +2348023234432) on her despite the fact that her rent and quit notice dated 31^st of October, 2020 is expected to lapse on April 30^th , 2021.

“Since then (when the quit notice was issued on her), Oyelami has been living in fear owing to the hostile nature of Alagbu who is parading himself as the landlord and his wife, Celestina Chinelo Alagbu against her. She has been subjected to all manners of indignities and harassment which has become very worrisome and call for concern.” He said.

While lamenting that the practice of illegal and forceful evictions of hapless citizens has become so rampant in the state, Sulaiman on behalf of the group stated that members would not hesitate to engage the state government, relevant security agents should they fail to investigate the developments as well as offer the right protections to the affected tenants.

“If those mentioned lawyers are willing to follow due process as provided for in the Lagos Tenancy Law, 2011, we on our part in Save Lagos Group are willing to give free legal services to the affected tenants from the beginning to the end of the matter but should they refuse, we will not hesitate to report them to Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association for engaging in what the group termed unethical conduct.

“We will also report them to the Body of Benchers, Legal Practitioners Privilege Committee, Council  of  Legal Education, Legal Practitioners’ Regulatory Committee, Legal Practitioners’ Practicing Council to set up a disciplinary tribunal for an investigating panel against the two lawyers according to the Legal Practitioners’ Act.” He said.

The group quoted the nation’s first lawyer, Late Christopher Sapara Williams in January 1888 who told the world “that a legal practitioner lives for the direction of his people and for the advancement of the course of his country and lawyers are presumably honest ministers of espousal of our laws. This, they should, abundantly demonstrate and must not be seen to twist the law.”

[PUNCH]   The Lagos State Government on Friday said that from July 1, 2016, it would commence a total enforcement against street trading and street hawkers, saying that the law banning their activities across the metropolis would take its full course.

Speaking at a live interview session on Television Continental, the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode said that the renewed enforcement is in line with Section One of the Lagos State Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law 2003 which restricts street trading and hawking in the metropolis.

The Governor, while sympathising with the family of a street hawker who was knocked down by an articulated truck while trying to evade arrest from officials of Kick Against Indiscipline along Maryland Bus stop on Wednesday, regretted that the situation led to the destruction of public assets.

“It is not in our DNA to allow someone to just die by road accident or the way it happened in respect of the incident. But beyond the fact that we lost one person while crossing the road as a result of evading arrest by KAI officials, I need to tell Lagosians that over 49 buses were actually destroyed and it is costing us like almost N139m to put those buses back on the road,” he said.

Consequently, Governor Ambode said the State Executive Council has resolved to enforce the Law, which according to him makes both the hawker and the buyer liable of the offence.

“The issue is we need to enforce our laws because we already have a law in respect of that and then there is a clause in it which says the buyer and the seller are both liable and that we are going to fine them either N90, 000 or a six month jail term.

“What we are doing on traffic is that we are introducing new strategies to eliminate traffic, but Lagos being a cosmopolitan city, you cannot totally eliminate it but now this is the case, in the next few days, you will see on the street of Lagos signs that will be warning you that buyers and hawkers should be aware that there are consequences,” Governor Ambode said.
