Grammy award-winning Nigerian Singer, Tenilade Openiyi popularly known as Tems, has reflected on the difficulties she faced at the start of her career, revealing that it was challenging for people to take her seriously, as an artist.
In an interview with CNN, Tems said she felt unsupported and unseen longtime, emphasizing that authenticity remains her most important value.
“Authenticity is everything to me. That’s the one thing I cannot compromise on because that’s all I have – who I really am”, she said.

Speaking about her initiative, Leading Vibe, Tems explained that the platform is designed to create opportunities for women working behind the scenes in music industry – including producers, managers and audio engineers.
She noted the project will soon expand beyond Nigeria to Kenya, with a mission to make talented women visible and reshape the perceptions in the music space.
