Spanish footballer Jesus de Miguel has died at the age of 30, a day after suffering an injury in an on-field collision during a second division match, his club CD Tenerife has announced.
“Heartbroken, with lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda at 8 a.m. on Tuesday”, the club said in a statement.
The incident occurred on Monday during the closing stages of the match between Tenerife and Andorra, which was tied 2-2. Owono rushed out of his goal to challenge for a long ball and collided with De Miguel, striking him in the chest and leaving him unconscious.
Medical personnel immediately rushed to treat the 30-year striker, administering emergency assistance before he was taken to hospital. Although his pulse was reportedly restored during the emergency response, his condition later deteriorated, with the club confirming his death on Tuesday.
Owono was shown a straight red card following the collision, while the match was abandoned in the 108 minute.
Spanish police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter, with prosecutors also expected to be involved.
Tenerife, FC Andorra and several football clubs and organisations have expressed condolences to De Miguel’s family, teammates and supporters. The Spanish Football Federation also postponed several scheduled matches as a mark of respect.
