Borno south lawmaker, Senator Ali Ndume has dismissed claims that the North is parasitic or dependent on other regions.
Speaking on Monday, the lawmaker emphasized that the North contributes significantly to the nation’s economy and is far from being a liability, asserting that the region remains a vital asset to Nigeria’s unity and development.
“The North has never been, and will never be, a parasite or dependent on any region. We are an asset to Nigeria, not a liability,” Ndume said.
The senator also addressed concerns surrounding the recent tax reforms, which some have alleged disproportionately target Northern interests.
He refuted these claims, stating that the reforms affect Nigerians across all regions, particularly those in the low- and middle-income brackets.
“Those who believe the current tax reforms target only Northern interests are misguided.
“These laws impact all low- and middle-income Nigerians alike,” he explained.
Ndume urged critics to approach the reforms with a balanced perspective, highlighting the shared challenges faced by citizens nationwide.
He called for unity and cooperation to address economic issues affecting Nigerians irrespective of their regional or ethnic backgrounds.
