ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated four new National Commissioners and two Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging the Senate to expedite their screening and confirmation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The nominations, announced on Friday, October 16, 2026, are intended to fill vacancies arising from the expiration of serving officials’ tenures, as preparations intensify for another nationwide electoral exercise.
The development places renewed attention on the composition, readiness and institutional responsibilities of Nigeria’s electoral umpire, with the next general elections expected to demand extensive logistical planning, personnel deployment and public confidence in the electoral process.
According to a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the Senate will scrutinise the nominees before their appointments can take effect.
Among the nominees, Professor Mustapha Aliu is expected to replace Professor Abdullahi Zuru as the National Commissioner representing the North-West, while Bashir Muhammed Umar has been nominated to succeed Professor Muhammad Adamu as the North-Central representative.
President Tinubu has also recommended Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, the current Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, for appointment as the National Commissioner representing the South-West. She is expected to replace Professor Cornelius Ajayi, whose tenure expires on October 24, 2026.
For the Resident Electoral Commissioner positions, the President nominated retired Permanent Secretary Dr Samuel Akinjide Akinleye to serve in Ekiti State, while Zahradden Basiru Sanusi, from Jigawa State, has been nominated to replace Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura.
In a related development, Tinubu reappointed Dr Bala Bila as the National Commissioner representing the North-East, meaning the announcement includes six new nominees and one reappointment.
The President’s request for accelerated confirmation comes as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 elections, a politically consequential exercise that will determine the country’s next set of elected leaders at the federal and state levels.
Beyond filling vacant positions, the nominations are significant because INEC’s national commissioners participate in the commission’s institutional decision-making, while resident electoral commissioners oversee electoral administration within their respective states.
Their responsibilities include supporting preparations for elections, coordinating administrative processes and implementing the commission’s directives within the applicable legal framework.
However, the nominations do not automatically translate into confirmed appointments. The Senate’s screening and confirmation remain necessary before the nominees can assume their respective positions, making the legislative process an important next step.
The development also brings the question of electoral credibility into sharper focus. As political parties, candidates and voters prepare for 2027, the commission will face expectations to demonstrate transparency, operational preparedness, impartiality and compliance with the Electoral Act and other applicable laws.
For the administration, securing timely confirmation could help address vacancies and support continuity within the electoral body. At the same time, public confidence will depend not merely on filling positions but also on how effectively INEC manages the electoral process and demonstrates independence in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.
With six nominees awaiting Senate scrutiny and a reappointment also announced, attention will now turn to the National Assembly’s handling of the nominations and the commission’s broader preparations for the forthcoming elections.
The central question ahead of 2027 is whether the appointments, once confirmed, will translate into stronger electoral administration and greater public confidence in the integrity of Nigeria’s elections.
