




In a celebratory reception held on Monday August 4, 2025 at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, honoured Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, for their record breaking fifth consecutive win at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
President Tinubu announced a monetary reward of the Naira equivalent of $100,000 for each player, while each members of the technical crew will receive $50,000 Naira equivalent.
In an historic gesture, all the players and crew members have also been awarded the prestigious Officer of the Niger (OON) National Honour.
Additionally, the President has approved the allocation of one flat each to every player, coach, and technical crew members in recognition of their outstanding contribution to Nigerian sports.
The recognition followed a similar state reception President Tinubu hosted last week for the Super Falcons, after their record-extending tenth Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) victory in Rabat, Morocco.
D’Tigress clinched their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title – and seventh overall – by defeating Mali 78-64 in the final played at the Palais des Sports de Treicheville, Abidjan Cote d’Ivoire.
Their remarkable wins reaffirmed their dominance in African women’s basketball and continued an unbroken winning streak that began in 2017.
First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubunand the wife of the Vice-President, Hajia Nana Shettima, as well as the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, joined the Vice-President to warmly receive the team on behalf of the President.
Shettima praised the team for their achievement, noting that they have become the Fist African Team to qualify for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Pre-Qualifying Tournament.
