US President Donald Trump has called for France to close its borders, blaming migration for the unrest gripping the European country.
“The migrants have taken over France. They must CLOSE THE BORDERS, FAST!” Trump said.
His remarks follows reports of widespread demonstrations, clashes with police, looting and damage to businesses and public buildings across France, with more than 2,400 people reportedly arrested.
French President Emmanuel Macron has acknowledged failures in anticipating the violence but rejected an offer of resignation from his interior minister amid mounting pressure over the government’s handling of the crisis.
The demonstrations, which reportedly began with students raising concerns about school conditions, have since expanded into a broader wave of protests over the rising cost of living and public services.
The unrest has put the French government under pressure to address the concerns driving the demonstrations while restoring public order.
Trump’s comments have added an international dimension to the crisis, with the US president using the unrest to renew his call for tougher border controls and restrictions on migration.
