Ukraine Exposes Western Double Standard in Response to Iran and Russia Attacks

Ukraine finds itself caught in a glaring West’s double standard as Russia continues its deadly attacks on the country, prompting Ukrainian officials to call out the lack of Western support. The stark contrast became evident when a coalition of Western and Arab partners, along with Israel’s sophisticated missile defense system, successfully intercepted Iranian missiles and drones targeting Israel. In response, the United States, Britain, France, Jordan, and other allies swiftly took action to minimize the damage caused by the assault on a non-NATO ally.

However, Ukrainians couldn’t help but reflect on their own situation. They have been locked in a full-blown war with their larger, invading neighbor for over two years. Russia has been launching relentless and indiscriminate drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities, targeting shopping areas, power plants, and residential blocks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed frustration, highlighting the disparity in international support: “The whole world saw that Israel was not alone in this defense — the threat in the sky was also being eliminated by its allies. And when Ukraine says that its allies should not turn a blind eye to Russian missiles and drones, it means action is needed — a bold one.”

Zelensky’s frustration grew further when Russian cruise missiles struck the downtown area of the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv, resulting in one of the deadliest attacks in recent months. At least 17 people were killed, and over 60 others were injured. Zelensky pointed out that this tragedy could have been prevented if Ukraine had received sufficient air defense equipment and if the world had demonstrated a stronger commitment to countering Russian aggression.

Following the attack on Chernihiv, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba lamented the lack of support his country was receiving compared to Israel: “These innocent people would not have been killed or injured if Ukraine had sufficient air defense capabilities. Three days ago in the Middle East, we saw what reliable protection of human lives from missiles looks like.”

Desperate for help, Ukraine urgently requires assistance, including shells for artillery units, fresh recruits for exhausted battalions, and fighter jets and missile defense systems to counter Russia’s relentless aerial onslaughts. Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, has been heavily targeted, enduring numerous Russian bombardments. The Economist noted that the city has faced an unprecedented number of ballistic missiles, as well as more frequent and technologically advanced drone assaults.

Russia has even deployed warplanes to drop Soviet-era glide bombs over Kharkiv, causing civilian casualties and damaging critical infrastructure like power plants. The mayor of Kharkiv, Ihor Terekhov, appealed for support, fearing that his city could become another Aleppo.

The Institute for the Study of War highlighted the vulnerabilities Ukraine faces due to its geography and the degradation of its air defense capabilities. It emphasized the urgent need for stronger defenses to counter regular Russian missile and drone strikes.

While there are some promising developments, such as efforts by U.S. lawmakers to pass a spending bill for Ukraine and Germany’s initiative to rush air defense equipment to Kyiv’s forces, Western officials remain cautious. They are hesitant to provide Ukraine with the same level of support and defense measures afforded to Israel, citing concerns about avoiding an escalation of conflict with Russia.

As Ukraine continues to face Russian aggression, its plea for equal defense falls on deaf ears, leaving the country vulnerable and in desperate need of international assistance to protect its people and secure its own future.
