The United States and Nigeria have taken another step toward deepening bilateral cooperation after U.S. President Donald Trump praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “decisive leadership” in a letter responding to the Nigerian leader’s correspondence, reaffirming Washington’s commitment to closer security and diplomatic ties with Africa’s most populous nation.
In the letter, Trump expressed appreciation for Tinubu’s message, describing the Nigerian President’s leadership as decisive while commending his resolve to address the country’s security challenges, particularly the violence affecting Christian communities.
“Thank you for your thoughtful letter. Your kind words mean a great deal to me, and I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people,” Trump wrote. “I applaud your resolve to tackle the issues plaguing your nation, especially the violence affecting Christian communities, and it is a true honor to stand with you in the fight against terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous.”
Trump described the relationship between the United States and Nigeria as increasingly vital at a time when conflict continues to spread across West Africa, stressing that both countries share a common objective of confronting terrorism in all its forms.
According to the U.S. President, the U.S.-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap has established a robust framework for enhanced military cooperation between both nations. He disclosed that the United States has deployed its elite Special Operations Forces to train and equip personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces with advanced operational skills, intelligence, and capabilities needed to strengthen Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts and improve national security.
“I am proud to have deployed the United States Special Operations Forces—among the most elite military units anywhere in the world—to equip the brave men and women in the Armed Forces of Nigeria with the skills, tools and intelligence they need to protect your homeland and ensure the safety and security of citizens, particularly those of faith who have been under attack,” Trump stated.
The American President concluded by expressing optimism over continued engagement with President Tinubu throughout his administration, saying he looked forward to further discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and making Nigeria “stronger and more prosperous.”
The correspondence marks another significant milestone in the evolving relationship between Abuja and Washington, reinforcing both nations’ commitment to expanding defence cooperation, combating terrorism, promoting regional stability, and advancing mutual diplomatic and strategic interests.
