The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of officers captured in a viral video counting large sum of money allegedly extorted from motorists in Delta State.
In a widely circulated footage, the officers were see seated inside the patrol vehicle by the roadside, openly counting wads of naira notes, sparking outrage from Nigerians who accused them of turning highways into cash-harvesting point.
Police authorities said the culprits have been identified, arrested, and taken to custody, adding that they will face trial before the Force’s disciplinary panel.
According to him, the two senior officers involved have already been issued queries, while the Inspectors have been detained and are going to face disciplinary panel.
“This level of unprofessionalism and corruption cannot be condoned. The officers have been arrested and will undergo orderly room trial to determine appropriate sanctions”, a senior police officers confirmed.
The development comes amid increasing reports of Police extortion across major highways in the country, with civil society groups demanding stricter accountability measures to restore public trust in law enforcement.
