Following recent reports that South African singer, Tyla denied Afrobeats while receiving an MTV Video Music Award on Wednesday, 9News Nigeria has gathered that the ‘Water’ crooner only spoke against the categorisation of all African music as Afrobeats.
Speaking during the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards while accepting her Best Afrobeats Song award, Tyla noted that although it was a “big moment for African music”, she has proved that African music can be Pop music.
“There’s a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats. It’s a thing”. She started.
In her address she further outlined that “African music is so diverse. It’s more than just Afrobeats”, emphasizing that she represents the ‘Amapiano’ genre.
