Xenophobia: South Africa High Commission Temporarily Shuts Down

The South African embassy in Lagos has been forced to temporarily shut its doors. It joins local businesses in Nigeria, MTN and Shoprite, which have come under attack.

The acting High Commissioner, Amb. Bobby Moroe explained that the reported attacks on South Africans in parts of the country informed the decision to close down the Mission.

He stated, “I directed that the Mission should be closed until the situation improves. We heard that South Africans were being pulled out of vehicles and attacked. We feel unsafe and that is why I directed that the mission should close down until further notice.”

Recall that hundreds of Zambian students dressed mostly in black and chanting ‘No Violence’, protested and burnt down the signpost of South African Embassy in Lusaka in response to ongoing xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other African migrants in South Africa.
