Yobe State Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Dr Muhammad Lawan Gana, has recieved a Distinguish Service award by the Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS).
He recieved the award on Thursday in his office in Damaturu.
This was following the conferment of the award on him by NCS in a ceremony earlier in Abuja.
The award was presented by Dr. Adamu Alhassan Umar, who collected the award on behalf of the commissioner during the award night, held at Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja on November 1.
During the presentation, Dr. Alhassan said he is presenting the award on behalf of the President, Nigerian Cancer Society, Prof Omonisi Abidemi Emmanuel.
Alhassan said that the award is in recognition of Mr. Lawan “huge contributions to cancer prevention and control, not only in Yobe State, but Nigeria at large.”
He noted that the commissioner, also a member of the society, has been an ardent supporter of cancer advocacy in the country and has demonstrated leadership in cancer prevention and control not only in Yobe state but the country at large.
While responding, the commissioner expressed his gratitude to NCS for recognizing his efforts and finding him worthy of the award, noting that he never expected to win such award.
He said however said that the work they have been doing is part of their responsibility, adding that public recognition and appreciation is only a call to do more.
“What we have been doing is honestly just part of the normal building of our system to ensure that the health and well-being of our people are safeguarded,” he said.
As part of the government’s plan to develop healthcare delivery, the commissioner said that they are striving to get a radiotherapy center in the state and “it is still in the pipeline.”
He further restate his commitment in ensuring a continues support to cancer programs in Yobe State and beyond.
Mr. Lawan also reiterated their government’s commitment to enhancing health services in the state, to ensure that Yobe enjoys the benefits of a healthy society.
Similarly, Dr. Alhassan informed the commissinoer that Yobe State has produced two among the seven newly elected officers of the Society.
The officers he noted are Hadiza Aliyu Manga as Deputy National Treasurer and Basheer Muhammad Ranccas as Director of Publicity.
Also at the presentation are Alhaji Isa Bukar, Alh Lawan Kaku, Alh Mohammed Kalli as well as other officers of the health ministry.
