Yobe State University Teaching Hospital has successfully performed a total hip replacement surgery on a young man suffering from a vascular necrosis of the head of the femur caused by sickle cell disease.

The hospital said the procedure is the first of its kind conducted in the region.

The surgery was led by Dr Lan Musa Yaki, alongside Dr. Musa Abdulmalik, Dr. Bashok Palagvi, Mr. Manasseh Jonah and Mr Karumi Ibrahim.

The state government attributed the breakthrough to Governor Mai Mala Buni’s investment in medical manpower and modern equipment.

The development comes months months after the Damaturu Specialist Hospital successfully performed a major maxillofacial surgery, making the two facilities pioneers in specialized surgeries among state-owned hospitals in the North East Nigeria.
