Young Venezuelans Pay Homage To Fallen Youths With Painted Asphalt

Names of 320 young Venezuelans who have died in 10 years of protests against the government of President Nicolas Maduro appear in white on the black asphalt in Caracas.

The tribute, which was painted in celebration of Youth Day along the access road to the Central University of Venezuela, honors the fallen on both sides of the political fence.

Their names include; Genesis Carmona, who was just 22 years old when she died in a crackdown on a protest in 2014, also included is Orlando Figuera, who at the age of 21 was killed, according to the government after being outed as a Maduro supporter.

President of a university student federation, Miguel Suarez, told reporters at the makeshift monument, that it is a protest to commemorate all the young people who lost their lives simply for raising their voices for the country they dreamed of, and for the country they wanted.

Another student leader, 23-year-old Miguel Angel Borsegui, told reporters that young Venezuelans lived in a country where they are intimidated and tried to be silenced by the government. Reporters saw Police guarded the periphery of the university, even as Maduro supporters used Youth Day to march on Parliament, seven months after he claimed victory in election, which he is widely accused of stealing.
