The Young Progressives Party (YPP) has expelled the lawmaker representing Nnewi North, Nnewi South, and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Peter Uzokwe, over allegations of anti-party activities and gross misconduct.

9news Nigeria reports that the party announced Uzokwe’s expulsion on Monday, November 3, 2025, after an emergency meeting of its National Working Committee (NWC) held at the YPP National Secretariat in Abuja.

According to a statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Martins Egbeola, the decision followed the emergence of a viral video showing the lawmaker openly declaring support for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Governor Chukwuma Soludo ahead of the November 8 Anambra governorship election.

In the controversial footage, Uzokwe was seen addressing a crowd and announcing his withdrawal of support for YPP candidate in the upcoming election.

“YPP is not contesting any election. Did you hear me? I am the leader of YPP, and my supporters are here. In my constituency, I have told them to collapse it for His Excellency Chukwuma Soludo,” Uzokwe said.

He further stated that the YPP had no interest in the forthcoming polls, insisting that only APGA and Soludo were in the race.

“We are not contesting any election. Even if we contest any, it has to be for Anambra North. So, YPP is not contesting. Only APGA and Soludo are running for this election. I will be home till after the election when His Excellency (Soludo) is returned to office,” he added.

The YPP leadership swiftly condemned the remarks, describing them as false, misleading, and a deliberate act of sabotage against the party’s interests.

Egbeola stated that Uzokwe’s action amounted to gross indiscipline and violated multiple provisions of the YPP constitution.

“The National Working Committee ratified the immediate expulsion of Hon. Peter Uzokwe, member representing Nnewi North, Nnewi South, and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency, for gross misconduct in contravention of the party’s constitution on Offences and Sanctions in Section 36(7), Article (b, f & o), page 68, after several petitions and video evidence of anti-party activities,” the statement read.

The NWC also dismissed Uzokwe’s claim of being the leader of the YPP, clarifying that the position has remained vacant since the death of the party’s late national leader, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

“The Party categorically refutes his false claim of being the leader of the YPP. At no time did the Party ratify or appoint him as its leader following the vacation of this position by the late Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah,” Egbeola stated.

He accused Uzokwe of attempting to mislead the public by attending an APGA rally and declaring that the YPP had no governorship candidate.

“Uzokwe’s appearance at an APGA rally, where he falsely declared that YPP has no candidate in the forthcoming Anambra State Governorship Election, is an act of desperation by a man whose political relevance has waned,” the party said.

The YPP National Working Committee described Uzokwe’s behaviour as “a deliberate attempt to deceive the public and destabilise the party.”

“His conduct is not only a violation of the party’s constitution but also an affront to collective discipline. Members and supporters are urged to disregard his statements and remain loyal to the YPP,” Egbeola added.

He assured that the party remains committed to internal reforms and credible participation in the November 8 governorship election, where YPP has fielded a candidate to challenge Governor Soludo.

9news Nigeria reports that the YPP, founded in 2017, gained national recognition following the election of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah as its first major officeholder in 2019.

However, following Ubah’s death in 2024, the party has faced internal divisions and leadership disputes, particularly in Anambra State.

Uzokwe’s expulsion marks the first major disciplinary action by the NWC since Ubah’s passing, underscoring the party’s effort to restore discipline and unity ahead of the crucial Anambra polls.

“The YPP remains committed to its founding ideals and will not tolerate acts capable of undermining its integrity,” the statement concluded.
