A fresh wave of political drama has emerged in Rivers State following the decision of Governor Siminalayi Fubara to withdraw from the 2027 governorship race under the All Progressives Congress, but his elder brother, Blessing Fubara Snr., has stepped into the contest after picking the governorship nomination form of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
Blessing Fubara’s entry into the race has stirred reactions across the state’s political landscape, with observers describing the development as a major twist in Rivers politics due to the involvement of members of the same family in different political camps.
Governor Fubara, in a statement released on May 20, 2026, announced his withdrawal from the APC gubernatorial primaries, explaining that the decision was taken after extensive consultations and careful reflection in the interest of peace, unity, and stability in Rivers State. The governor said leadership sometimes requires personal sacrifice and pledged his support for whoever emerges as the APC candidate for the election.
The governor also acknowledged the disappointment of supporters who had backed his political ambition, but urged them to remain loyal to the APC and continue to work for the unity of the state. He revealed that he faced intense political pressures and difficult choices in recent months, stressing that his withdrawal should not be seen as weakness or surrender, but as a deliberate move to preserve peace and stability in Rivers State.
Fubara further expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC leadership for their encouragement and support, while reaffirming his commitment to continue serving the people of Rivers State until the end of his tenure.
