After several attacks by insurgency in Damasak, the headquarters of Mobbar local government area of Borno state, displaced residents are seen fleeing the town to seek shelter elsewhere, causing more displacement in the state.

A report by Yerwa Express News newspaper confirmed the displacement on Wednesday, noting that the recent attack by insurgents in the community was carried out on Wednesday evening around 3pm by members of the Islamic States of West African Province (ISWAP), making it the sixth within two weeks.

The chairman of Damasak local government, Mustapha Bunu Kolo, was quoted by Yerwa Express News saying, ‘Yesterday’s attack was their fifth and worst within the last two weeks. They came prepared. On entering the town, they went straight towards the military barracks and exchanged fire for several hours but fortunately, they could not take over the barrack.’

The report noted that about 10 people lost their lives and 8 others sustained injuries. Also, several buildings, including Non-governmental organization’s facility, hospital and traditional heads compound among other things were destroyed during the attack.

A month ago, the insurgents have attempted to overrun the town with several attacks within a week but we’re rebelled by Nigerian army and other security outfits.

However, the latest attack could have caused more tension on uncertainty on the residents, forcing them to flee the town.

This displacement may likely add more humanitarian crisis in Borno, the headquarters of Boko Haram insurgency.

Despite efforts by the state governors, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum to relocate displaced persons seeking shelter in the state capital Maiduguri for several years, the new phase of displacement could sabotage his efforts and add more woes to the existing ones.

However, there is yet no official statement from the army or any security forces on the fresh attack at the time of filling this report.
