The ongoing power struggle between former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has significantly influenced the conduct of the local government elections in the state.

The elections, which are crucial for selecting grassroots leaders, have been marred by tensions as both camps vie for control.

Wike, who lost his political structure when his loyalists exited office earlier this year, has been desperate to regain influence.

This has led to a fierce conflict with Governor Fubara, who insists on the legality of holding the elections to comply with federal mandates.

Wike’s allies had sought to block the polls, while Fubara’s administration pushed forward, determined to replace caretaker committees with elected officials, as required by a Supreme Court ruling.

Tensions escalated further when Wike’s faction organized protests ahead of the elections.

However, the elections proceeded despite concerns about security and the absence of police in some areas.

The stakes are high, with Wike’s future influence in Rivers politics hanging in the balance amid his efforts to control the political scene from behind the scenes.

With concerns over the state’s governance, a close watch will show how this power struggle will shape the political landscape in Rivers.
