Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team has raised concerns over the Department of State Services (DSS) preventing all visitors, including Kanu’s lawyers, from accessing him in custody.
In a statement issued on 14th October 2024 by Aloy Ejimakor, a member of Kanu’s legal team, the lawyers condemned the DSS’s latest actions as a violation of the court-ordered visitation regimen.
According to the release, the DSS has restricted all access to Kanu since his last court appearance on 24th September 2024, during which he demanded the recusal of Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako from presiding over his case.
The legal team believes this ongoing denial of access stems from Kanu’s successful request for Justice Nyako’s recusal, which was later overturned by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
The statement also recalled previous instances where the DSS had violated court orders on visitation, prompting the legal team to file applications for enforcement.
However, these applications have yet to be scheduled for hearing, which, according to the lawyers, gives the impression that the DSS may be operating above the law.
Kanu’s legal team emphasized the importance of regular visits to ensure his wellbeing, questioning the DSS’s motive for blocking access.
“What is the DSS hiding?” the statement reads. “Is Mazi Nnamdi Kanu hale and hearty?”
The legal team’s concerns now center on Kanu’s condition, as they urge the DSS to comply with the court’s directives and restore visitation rights.
