Former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the arrest of human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi.
In a statement on Tuesday, Obi expressed deep concern over Farotimi’s detention by the Nigeria Police Force following allegations of defamation, describing it as a misuse of police powers and a violation of democratic principles in Nigeria.
He called the action “a grave assault on the principles of democracy and justice” and emphasized that it sets a dangerous precedent for freedom of expression in the country.
“This action is a gross misuse of police powers and a troubling attempt to intimidate opposing voices from questioning authority.
“It is also a worrying signal to every Nigerian who values freedom of expression and dares to demand accountability and transparency.” Obi said.
Obi reminded the police of their duty to protect the rights of citizens, not suppress them, and insisted that defamation is a civil matter that should be addressed in court through due process.
“As a private citizen and former governor, I have often been defamed, insulted, and lied against. Yet, I have never resorted to using the police to silence others. Those who feel aggrieved should seek redress through proper legal channels, not by weaponizing state power,” he added.
Obi decried the arrest as an abuse of power and raised concerns about the independence and professionalism of the Nigerian police.
He warned that such actions undermine public confidence in law enforcement and damage the nation’s democratic foundations.
He then called for the immediate and unconditional release of Farotimi, urging the police to act in accordance with the Constitution and prioritize the interests of Nigerians over the demands of powerful individuals.
“The police must recognize that their allegiance is to the Constitution and the people of Nigeria, not to narrow interests at the behest of those in power,” Obi said.
