LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM – Former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has been cleared of bribery charges by a United Kingdom court in a landmark ruling that has drawn significant attention across Nigeria and the international oil and gas industry.

A jury at Southwark Crown Court in London on Wednesday returned unanimous not-guilty verdicts on six counts of bribery and conspiracy to commit bribery against the former minister after more than 46 hours of deliberations.

Alison-Madueke, who served as Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum Resources between 2010 and 2015 under former President , had faced allegations that she received benefits and luxury accommodations from individuals connected to the oil and gas sector in exchange for influence over the award of lucrative contracts.

Prosecutors alleged that the former minister enjoyed what they described as “a life of luxury” in London, including access to high-end properties and other benefits allegedly provided by business figures seeking favorable treatment in Nigeria’s petroleum industry.

Throughout the trial, however, Alison-Madueke consistently denied any wrongdoing. She maintained that she neither accepted bribes nor exercised direct authority over the allocation of government contracts, arguing that the accusations against her were unfounded.

The case attracted widespread attention due to Alison-Madueke’s prominent role in Nigeria’s oil sector during one of the country’s most significant periods of petroleum production and revenue generation. As minister, she was one of the most influential figures in Africa’s energy industry and also served as the first female president of the Conference.

The jury’s decision marks a major legal victory for the former minister, bringing an end to one of the most closely watched corruption-related trials involving a former Nigerian public official in a foreign jurisdiction.

Legal analysts say the verdict underscores the importance of the burden of proof in criminal proceedings, where prosecutors must establish guilt beyond reasonable doubt. The unanimous verdict suggests the jury was not convinced that the evidence presented met the threshold required for conviction.

The ruling is expected to generate debate within Nigeria’s political and legal circles, particularly among those who have closely followed investigations and allegations involving former public officials. Supporters of Alison-Madueke view the judgment as a vindication of her long-standing claims of innocence, while critics argue that broader questions surrounding governance and accountability in the oil sector remain unresolved.

With the verdict now delivered, attention is likely to shift to the wider implications of the case for anti-corruption efforts, international cooperation in financial crime investigations, and public perceptions of accountability among political leaders. For Diezani Alison-Madueke, the judgment represents a significant turning point in a legal battle that has remained in the spotlight for years.
