The Federal Government has ordered an immediate crackdown on child labour, particularly the involvement of children in hazardous activities across the mining, construction and agricultural sectors.
The government said children must not be exposed to dangerous working environments or forced to undertake tasks that threaten their health, safety and development.
The directive was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Dr Kamill Shoretire, at a training workshop for labour correspondents in Abuja.
Shoretire warned against the growing practice of using children in hazardous mining operations, construction sites and other dangerous workplaces.
He urged relevant regulatory agencies and security authority to strengthen monitoring and enforcement to protect children from exploitation.
He also called for closer collaboration between federal, state and local governments, ministries, regulatory agencies and security institutions to identify and stop cases of child labour.
The Federal Government’s renewed action follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive for states and relevant government agencies to implement the National Policy and National Action Plan for the Elimination of Child Labour 20026 -2030.
