Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has criticised former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi over his claim that economic policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu contributed to the death of his mother.
Amaechi made the claim during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, October 2, 2026, saying the rising cost of medicines under the Tinubu administration made it difficult for him to afford the drugs his mother needed.
Reacting on Saturday, October 3, Wike accused Amaechi of bringing his late mother into political arguments and questioned how the former governor, who served in several senior political positions, could claim he was unable to afford her medication.
Wike also pointed to properties he said Amaechi owns in Old GRA, Port Harcourt, and Abuja, while questioning why he did not seek assistance from friends and associates if he was struggling to pay for his mother’s treatment.
“It’s unfortunate. I thought that, for whatever reason, we must respect our parents. Imagine someone using his own late mother to play politics. Look at the house you are living in Old GRA, look at the house you are living in Abuja, and then you said you were unable to buy drugs, and that’s why your mother died”, Wike said.
“Enough of this kind of embarrassment. Instead of me having this kind of child, may I remain childless”, he added.
Wike remarks came during an engagement with political leaders and stakeholders in Ahoada, Rivers State.
