Uyo is gaining international attention as a destination for media investment and digital innovation following the unveiling of the C54 News Global Streaming Dome, an ambitious pan-African media project that has chosen Akwa Ibom State as its international headquarters.

The facility was unveiled on Wednesday, October 14, at the 21-storey Udom Emmanuel Towers, with former Nigerian Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi and renowned political economist Professor Pat Utomi among the dignitaries in attendance.

The development places Uyo at the centre of a project designed to expand African-owned news production, digital broadcasting and documentary storytelling for audiences across the continent and beyond.

For Akwa Ibom, the significance extends beyond the prestige of hosting prominent African leaders. The investment presents an opportunity to attract media professionals, technology specialists, filmmakers, advertisers and other creative industry operators to the state.

C54 News is being developed as a 24-hour global streaming news platform focused on journalism, documentaries and data, with the ambition of bringing stories from Africa to African and international audiences.

Speaking at the event, Masisi described the initiative as a strategic investment in Africa’s ability to tell its own stories rather than allow external media organisations to dominate global perceptions of the continent.

He stressed that the platform’s credibility would depend on accuracy, fairness, editorial independence and integrity, warning that technological sophistication and international reach alone would not guarantee public trust.

Obasanjo also welcomed the initiative, arguing that African-owned media platforms could help correct the longstanding imbalance in international reporting about the continent.

Jonathan urged African media organisations to highlight the continent’s innovation, enterprise, culture, natural resources and economic opportunities through accurate and balanced reporting.

Utomi, who chaired the event and heads the board of the parent FOAN Group, highlighted the importance of indigenous media institutions in connecting African people, businesses, industries and ideas.

South African Consul-General to Nigeria, Professor Bobby Moroe, also commended the project, describing it as a pan-African initiative capable of supporting continental cooperation and stronger relationships among African countries.

C54 News founder and Chief Executive Officer Idris-Etanami Usman said the platform was established to connect Africa through journalism, culture and ideas, while promoting a broader understanding of the continent as an interconnected economic and cultural space.

Jobs, Investment and the Challenge of Delivery

Beyond the international recognition, the key question for Uyo residents is whether the project will translate into tangible economic benefits.

A major digital media operation could create opportunities for journalists, camera operators, editors, documentary producers, software developers, digital marketers and other creative professionals.

It could also generate demand for accommodation, transportation, catering, equipment supply, event management and other services, provided the organisation develops substantial operations in the city.

However, these benefits will depend on the scale of its workforce, investment commitments, local recruitment, training programmes and the extent to which production and commercial activities are conducted in Uyo.

The company’s published roadmap offers an important distinction between the unveiling and full commercial operations. FOAN Group lists October 14, 2026, as the date for C54 News’ shadow launch, while scheduling its commercial launch for August 2027. The company says the latter phase is expected to open full commercial operations across advertising, subscriptions, licensing and enterprise services.

This means the unveiling is a significant milestone, but the platform’s longer-term economic impact will need to be assessed against its subsequent expansion, job creation and commercial performance.

Why Uyo Matters:

The choice of Uyo is significant for a state seeking to attract investment beyond traditional sectors and strengthen its position in technology, tourism and the creative economy.

The parent company identifies production and commercial hubs in Uyo, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Lagos and Senegal, suggesting that the project is intended to operate across several African markets rather than function solely as a local broadcasting station.

With its international headquarters in Uyo, Akwa Ibom has an opportunity to attract talent, build professional capacity and establish stronger links with Africa’s media and technology industries.

For residents, the real measure of success will be whether this international attention leads to sustainable employment, skills development, new businesses and lasting investment.

The arrival of three former African presidents and other prominent figures has given Uyo a major moment of visibility. Turning that visibility into measurable economic progress will be the next test.
