A COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AFTER THE SOUTH-EAST YOUTH LEADERS’ SECURITY SUMMIT, HELD IN OWERRI ON TUESDAY, 9TH JUNE, 2021

The level of Insecurity within the Zone in no doubt has given every responsible cum reasonable citizens of the South-East a huge concern and it is on this note, that youth leaders from different organisations across the region, unanimously came to discuss the way out of the quagmire that we have found ourselves.

A COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AFTER THE SOUTH EAST YOUTH LEADERS SECURITY SUMMIT HELD IN OWERRI ON TUESDAY 9TH JUNE 2021.

After a four hour deliberation, the Youth leaders in unison came up with the following resolutions as panacea to the insecurity situation facing South East, that;

  1. There must be strict implementation of the open grazing ban by South-East Governors.
  2. There must be the implementation of State Policing within the South East.
  3. There must be an inclusion of Youths in Governance across the South East States.
  4. We propose for an all-inclusive South East Youth stakeholders meeting with His Excellency, President Mohammadu Buhari GCFR, to officially register our displeasure and get firm assurance of inclusiveness at the Federal level
  5. The State Governors should conduct Local Government Elections across the South East States within three(3) months from this day, 9/6/21.
  6. Dismantling of all Military and Police road blocks and replacing them with police patrol teams should take an immediate effect.
  7. There should be massive employment of youths by State Governments across the South East. Also, payment of salaries and pensions must be done as at when due by these Governors.
  8. The South East Governors Should constitute an unbiased panel of inquiry across the South East States to ascertain abuses, violation of Human Rights, extortion of motorists and other citizens and extra judicial killings by the security personnel
  9. We enjoin citizens of South East to respect law and policies of the government and also help the state actors in protecting Government own assets and Public institutions.
  10. All South East Leaders (Political, Religious and Traditional) must always never fail to rise up and speak against unfair policies of the Federal Government as it concerns the South East region.
  11. Governors of the South East should desist from making hasty comments when situations arise. They must always wait for security agencies to finish their investigations thoroughly before speaking.
  12. We therefore appeal and advice all aggrieved persons in the zone to sheath their swords for the interest and peace of the zone.
  13. We urge the South East Governors to be serious in the formulation of a functional Regional Security Outfit to compliment the police in combating insecurity in the zone
  14. All the Youths falsely and illegally detained should be released immediately.
  15. The CCTV footage of the attack on Imo State Police Headquarters and the Imo State Correctional Centre should be released to reflect the real position of things as information has it that none of the perpetrators of that crime seen in that said record are from South East.
  16. We have come to the conclusion that the insecurity in Imo State is political and must not be attributed to IPOB nor its security formation ESN.
  17. Government should roll out compensations for the families of the innocent victims of stray bullets.
  18. Finally, it is a fact that the South Easterners have paid their dues in this country as real promoters for the good, growth and development of Nigeria. It is therefore necessary and important for the sake of justice, equity and fairness, we urge all political parties that would be participating in the 2023 Presidential Election to consider just a South Easterner as standard party flag bearers.
This will go along way to foster peace and unity in the country.
