The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Dr. Eric Opah, has declared that he would ensure the release of detained separatist leader, Nnamdi Kanu, if elected governor in the 2027 general election.
Opah made the bold declaration while addressing supporters during a political engagement ahead of the 2027 governorship race in Abia State.
According to him, securing Kanu’s freedom would be one of his top priorities upon assuming office as governor.
“I will set Mazi Nnamdi Kanu free once I become Governor of Abia State in 2027. I said it, and I will do it. I have the capacity, don’t doubt me,” Opah stated.
The APC governorship hopeful did not provide details on how he intends to achieve the release of the IPOB leader, whose detention has remained a major political and legal issue in the South-East region.
Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been in the custody of the Nigerian government over charges bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony, a development that has continued to generate reactions across the country.
Opah’s comments are expected to spark fresh political debate in Abia and the wider South-East, where calls for Kanu’s release have remained a recurring issue among political leaders, activists and pro-Biafra supporters.
