Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has asked President Bola Tinubu to apologise to Nigerians and resign over the controversy surrounding the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC).
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said conflicting explanations from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Central Bank of Nigeria had raised serious concerns.
He noted that both institutions gave different accounts of how PFIPC-linked bank accounts were opened, describing the situation as a major credibility challenge for the Tinubu administration.
Atiku urged the President to state which version his government believes or immediately order an independent investigation into the matter.
He also criticised the silence of the Attorney-General of the Federation, saying it had further fuelled public suspicion over the controversy.
The former vice president called on the National Assembly to summon the Accountant-General and the CBN Governor to explain the conflicting claims before lawmakers.
According to Atiku, if the President cannot restore public confidence through a transparent investigation and hold those responsible accountable, he should apologise to Nigerians and resign.
The controversy followed conflicting explanations from the Accountant-General’s Office and the Central Bank over the opening of bank accounts linked to the PFIPC. The House of Representatives is currently investigating the matter.
