Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, was bitterly disappointed after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu selected Kashim Shettima as his running mate in 2022.
Wike, speaking on Channels Television on Tuesday, said Lawal personally visited him in Port Harcourt shortly after the announcement to express his frustration, believing that Tinubu would have chosen him as Vice President.
“After President Tinubu chose Shettima as his VP, Babachir Lawal came to my house in Port Harcourt. He was very angry because he thought he would be the one picked,” Wike recounted.
The FCT Minister’s comments come in response to Lawal’s recent statements, in which the former SGF criticized the Tinubu administration and claimed that the president had failed to live up to expectations.
Wike, however, dismissed Lawal’s claims as the bitterness of a politician who felt sidelined.
“People should understand where his anger is coming from. It didn’t start today,” Wike added.
Lawal, who was Secretary to the Government of the Federation under President Muhammadu Buhari until 2017, has in recent weeks been vocal about his disapproval of Tinubu’s leadership style.
