Notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji, has declared that his group is open to negotiations with the Nigerian government but is also prepared for armed confrontation if authorities choose a military approach.
Turji made the statement in a Hausa-language video reportedly recorded on June 20, 2026, where he addressed the ongoing conflict between his fighters and security agencies.
In the video, the bandit kingpin said his group would respond based on the government’s decision, stressing that they were willing to consider peace talks if the authorities were ready.
“If the government is ready for negotiation, we are also ready for negotiation. But if they want to continue with force, we are prepared. Our fighters are ready for whatever comes,” he said.
Turji also claimed his fighters would not surrender under military pressure, warning that they were prepared to resist any offensive launched against them.
“We are ready for peace, but if they choose war, we are also ready. We will defend ourselves,” he added.
The statement comes shortly after an attack along the Isa–Bargaja axis in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, where suspected terrorists linked to Turji were accused of attacking security personnel responding to a distress call.
Sources said an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) reportedly exploded during the operation, leading to the death of at least four soldiers. However, the military has not officially confirmed the casualty figures.
The latest threat has raised fresh concerns over insecurity in parts of Nigeria’s North-West, where armed groups continue to operate despite ongoing security operations and efforts toward dialogue.
