The 36 States Governors of Nigeria have scheduled an emergency meeting today to discuss and find common ground and lasting solution in the contentious issue of the proposed new minimum wage, which has been a subject of debate between the Federal Government, States and Organised Labour.
The meeting follows the Federal Executive Council’s (FEC) decision to postpone deliberations on the minimum wage Memo on Tuesday.
The Governors had previously rejected the Federal Government’s proposed minimum wage of N62,000, citing concerns that some States would need to borrow funds to implement the new minimum wage.
However, Organised Labour remains resolute in it demand for a minimum wage of N250,000.
Açcording to Halima Ahmed, Acting Director on Media and Public Affairs of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), the Governors will meet at 7 pm today (Wednesday) in Abuja to discuss the matter and potentially find a way forward.
