Former Delta State Governor Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan has died at 71.
Uduaghan reportedly died on the morning of Monday, October 19, 2026, following a brief illness. His family announced his death, formally announced by Toju Anire Uduaghan on behalf of the family.
The family described his passing as a devastating loss, saying the former governor was not only a respected political figure but also a father, brother, uncle, patriarch and source of strength to many.
According to the family, Uduaghan’s death has created a deep void within his family, Delta State and Nigeria, particularly among those who benefited from his years of public service.
Dr. Uduaghan, a medical doctor and politician, served as Governor of Delta State for two terms between 2007 and 2015. Before becoming governor, he served as the state’s Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003 and later as Secretary to the Delta State Government from 2003 to 2007.
During his eight years as governor, Uduaghan was associated with various human-capital and infrastructural development initiatives across Delta State. His administration also focused on healthcare and other sectors of the state’s development.
His death comes months after false reports of his demise circulated on social media in June 2026. At the time, his family and representatives of the Delta State Government dismissed the reports, confirming that he was alive and receiving medical attention.
However, the latest reports of his death have been independently published by several major Nigerian news organisations, with his family now confirming the development.
The family has appealed for prayers and comfort for relatives, friends, associates, former colleagues and all those mourning the former governor.
Uduaghan’s death marks the end of the life of one of Delta State’s prominent political figures, whose career spanned medicine, public administration and eight years at the helm of affairs of the oil-rich state.
Further details concerning the circumstances surrounding his death and funeral arrangements are expected to be released by the family.
