African’s jazz legend, Hugh Masekela,”the father of South African jazz” as he is often called, has died at the aged 78.
Masekela was a South African trumpeter. He died in Johannesburg after battling prostate cancer.
This was disclosed in a statement by his family on Tuesday.
“After a protracted and courageous battle with prostate cancer, he passed peacefully in Johannesburg, South Africa, surrounded by his family.” the statement reads
Masekela gained global recognition with his distinctive Afro-Jazz sound and hit song-Soweto Blues.
Masekela was number three on the list of top ten African richest musicians.
