The National Judicial Council (NJC) has suspended Justice G. C. Aguma of the High Court of Rivers State and Justice A. O. Nwabunike of the Anambra State High Court from performing judicial duties for one year without pay.
Following their suspension, both judges will be placed on a two-year watch list.
This decision was reached during the NJC’s 107th meeting, chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, on November 13 and 14, 2024. In total, five judicial officers were sanctioned for various acts of misconduct.
Additionally, the NJC has recommended the compulsory retirement of two senior judicial figures for age falsification. The Chief Judge of Imo State, Hon. Justice T. E. Chukwuemeka Chikeka, and the Grand Kadi of Yobe State, Hon. Kadi Babagana Mahdi, are set to retire following the Council’s findings.
The Council reviewed 30 petitions, dismissing 22 for lack of merit and identifying two as sub judice.
It also empanelled six committees for further investigation and set up a committee to probe all complaints against Hon. Justice O. A. Ojo, Chief Judge of Osun State.
