Senate Approves 20-Year Jail Term For Ballot Box Snatchers In Nigeria
Senate okays 20-year jail for candidates snatching ballot materials
The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday passed a bill condemning ballot box snatchers to a 20-year jail term.
This is even as the lawmakers passed a bill to establish the Electoral Offences Commission, okaying the 20-year jail term for candidates caught snatching ballot materials.
The bill’s passage followed the consideration of a report by the Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission.
In his presentation, Chairman of the Committee on INEC, Senator Kabiru Gaya of the APC, representing Kano South Senatorial District, stated that the bill became imperative in view of INEC’s inability to prosecute electoral offenders in accordance with the provisions of a section 149 and 150(2) of the Electoral Act (as Amended).”
