The Senate yesterday passed a resolution, urging the Federal Government to provide low interest loans to herders for the establishment of ranches.
The resolution is a way to address the clashes between farmers and herdsmen in the country, the lawmakers said.
The resolution followed the consideration of the report of an ad-hoc committee on the review of the country’s security infrastructure, chaired by Senate leader, Ahmad Lawan.
After debate on the committee’s report, the Senate passed 20 resolutions on how to address the country’s security challenges.
The Senate resolved that the nation’s basic security infrastructure needs to be reviewed and strengthened.
“The Nigerian political structure should be a major factor in this review, as well as the nature of the challenges the nation faces. There is a strong case for review of the nature of the Federal system, which should be pursued with responsibility and strong political will,” it said.
The report stressed the need to isolate current security challenges from political partisanship, narrow political interests and ethno-religious sentiments.
Senate President Bukola Saraki said “We will work hard to ensure the implementation of the recommendation to address the criminality and insecurity. We must separate the criminality from other issues.”
