ABUJA (9NEWS NIGERIA) – The prosecution of the former governor of Abia State Senator Orji Kalu has been stalled at the Federal High Court Abuja today.
The Senate Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, had this morning arrived at the Federal High Court in Abuja to be docked before Justice Inyang Ekwo on money laundering related charges.
The court had last year scheduled arraignment of Kalu by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC in Abuja for the 2nd of February 2021.
The prosecution counsel, Mr Chile Okoroma informed the court that EFCC had written a letter to the Chief Judge of the federal high court seeking the transfer of the case to the Lagos Division of the Court.
He said the request is predicated on previous decisions of the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal which held that “no element of defence in the charge took place in Abuja.
He urged the court to adjourn the matter indefinitely pending the decision of the Chief Judge. Justice Inyang Ekwo however, declined to adjourn indefinitely and fixed 7th of June for a report on the decision of the Chief Judge.
