President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has officially concluded his tenure as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, handing over leadership to President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone during the 67th Ordinary Session held in Abuja.
The moment marked the end of Tinubu’s impactful two-year stewardship, characterized by his push for economic collaboration, peace-building, and regional solidarity.
In his farewell address, President Tinubu urged West African leaders to remain steadfast in their commitment to regional integration, describing it as the key to sustainable economic growth and political stability in the sub-region.
“Our strength lies in our unity,” Tinubu emphasized. “Regional integration must remain our collective ambition if we are to overcome our shared challenges and unlock our full potential.”
He also took a firm stance on the worsening security crisis across West Africa, calling for joint military and intelligence collaboration to combat threats such as terrorism, insurgency, and organized crime.
“No single country can tackle insecurity alone,” Tinubu said. “Only a united regional security framework can deliver lasting peace.”
The Nigerian leader went further to champion youth and women empowerment, stressing that inclusive development remains essential for the future of the region.
“Women and young people are the heartbeat of West Africa’s future. It is time we moved beyond rhetoric to real policies that empower them,” he declared.
Incoming Chair, President Julius Maada Bio, lauded Tinubu for his leadership, acknowledging his pivotal role in advancing ECOWAS’ vision during turbulent times. He assured the body of his dedication to deepening regional cooperation and sustaining reforms.
