The Forward Operations Base (FOB) in Bonny, Rivers State successfully rescued 59 individuals from a stranded dredging vessel at the mouth of the Opobo River. The distress call about the endangered vessel, MV AMBIKA 4, which was under contract with Sterling Global Oil Limited and deployed at the Opobo field, was received by the Nigerian Navy’s spokesman, Aiwuyor Aliu-Adams.

In response, the FOB Bonny immediately deployed a 10-man armed team in two interceptor boats led by the Base Operations Officer, Lieutenant Commander Gideon Gwaza. Additional support in the form of three boats, Nigerian Navy Ship GONGOLA, drones, Nigerian Navy Helicopters, and one Nigerian Airforce helicopter was dispatched for a Search and Rescue mission.

Despite the challenges posed by the turbulent river, all 59 crew members were successfully rescued. Unfortunately, the Base Operations Officer, Gwaza, lost his life during the mission. The Nigerian Navy mourns the loss of Gwaza, recognizing his courage and ultimate sacrifice. Gwaza, a well-trained combat diver, exemplified the risks and sacrifices made by Nigerian Navy personnel to ensure the safety of Nigeria’s maritime domain.
