Member representing Owerri Municipal and Deputy Minority Leader Imo House of Assembly IMHA , Rt Hon Clinton Amadi has called on the commissioner for Education alongside the state government to as a matter of urgency provide adequate security personnel to all the secondary and primary schools in Imo State.
The clarion call came at the floor of the House IMHA Thursday afternoon, 24th October, 2024, where Hon Clinton Amadi, member representing Owerri Municipal state Constituency presented his motion.
The motion to urge His Excellency, Governor Hope Uzodinma CON, to direct the commissioner for Education to ensure the adequate security personnel are provided to our secondary and primary schools in the state was chiefly sponsored by Hon Clinton Amadi and co-sponsored by twelve other Honourable members.
The sponsor of the motion Clinton Amadi, member representing Owerri Municipal state constituency decried prevailing dangers insecurity has caused across Imo primary and secondary schools.
Amadi noted that the activities of criminals and vandals who invade the school presmesis during and after the study period have turned Imo state school public premises to dangerous zones and has made the entire environment deplorable.
He further hinted that the activities of these criminals and vandals included defecating both within and around the school presmesis, smoking of Indian hemp and other hard drugs, turning the classrooms, teachers and principals and head teachers office to chalets mostly at night hours to satisfy themselves and sometimes intimidate students and lure them to some indecent lifestyles and acts.
Their obnoxious activities have included littering the school presmesis with all forms of illegal items like used condoms, pieces of hard drugs and tobacco, breaking of offices, stealing of furnitures, gates, doors and windows etc.
Recall that Imo state has always been known as one of the states with high literacy rate in Nigeria and a place where education is seriously regarded as a priority. The Legislator also acknowledged the investments of Governor Hope Uzodinma in the education sector to ensure that quality education is provided for citizens of the state.
He frowned the absence of security personnel attached to public schools has jeopardized the ambience the government has put in place by providing adequate and conducive environment for Imo children to concentrate and learn.
Rt Hon Amadi further alerted the state that these criminals also endanger the lives of everyone in Imo state including the teachers and students who try to challenge their nefarious activities.
Honorable members who spoke in favour of the motion called on parents to tutor their children to be good citizens at in the society.
The members maintained that providing adequate security in public primary and secondary schools is very important to curb signals of abduction of Imo children from various schools just as it is happening in the far Northern Nigeria .
Another serious point raised was the total ban of iron condemn scavengers to stop further breakages of schools, houses and destruction of iron metal used to decorate the state.
The mover of this motion, Clinton Amadi also sighted the incident that happened recently in Development Secondary School Douglas road Owerri where the teachers of the school stormed his House of Assembly office to lay down their complaints.
He added that schools in the municipality are constantly attacked and both teachers and students are being harassed , molested by criminal elements who sneek into the premises during school and study hours without any security interrogation or check.
Meanwhile, some schools like Ikenegbu Girls, Township Primary school, Development Secondary School and other schools at the rural communities are being faced with same attacks on regular basis including cult related activities hosted in such public school spaces.
In rural communities, cultists assemble and host some of their cult related initiations , activities in public primary and secondary schools across villages in many autonomous communities. Report has it that such prevailing danger has made many Imo children fall prey to criminal tutoring of these hoodlums and inturn dishes out bad children in the society.
The motion was seconded by the Deputy Majority Leader IMHA, Hon Sam Osuji and co-sponsored by twelve others.
