A coalition, 22 Concerned Nigeria Political Pressure Group, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to stop the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from further harrassing the former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.
It said that the action was targeted at humiliating the former president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan who in his statesmanship, conceded defeat in the 2015 General Election which prevented blood bath across the length and breath of the country.
The group which stated this at a media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, lamented that Mrs Jonathan remains the only former First Lady that has suffered so much humiliation in the hands of the anti graft agency.
A statement by Ali Abacha for Northern Patriotic Development Initiative and Ogbuevi Fidelisuma, National Coordinator, South-East, said President Jonathan has maintained a studied silence over this persistent controversial persecution and ridicule of his wife.
“Jonathan has concentrated on his very busy international engagements, all of which he is undertaking on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as former President, in respect of which, he is constitutionally required to report to President Buhari. “Jonathan is also a key member of the Council of States which is the country’s highest policy advisory organ which President Buhari chairs”, they said.
The coalition noted that former President Jonathan served loyally as Vice President to late Yar’Adua and both of them laid the solid foundation for the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme in 2007/2008, a firm foundation upon which President Buhari is currently building on to check the ongoing militancy in the area.
“It is against this background that we are calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to quickly intervene and halt this unnecessary persecution of Jonathan through his wife by the EFCC.”
They commended the president on the war against corruption but added that certain elements within his cabinet were making a mockery of the fight.
