Como vs Cagliari ends in a goalless at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia

Surprise European aspirants Como were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Cagliari at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, though the result does little for the Islanders either, as they are now without a win in any of their last seven matches (D3, L4).

Como came into this game as a side in form, having not lost in any of their previous nine games in all competitions (W4, D5), and Cesc Fabregas’ team looked in complete control early on with swathes of possession.

The Lariani were on the right side of a controversial VAR decision with 20 minutes played though, as Alex Valle turned the ball into his own goal before it was ruled out for a foul in the build-up, leaving the Cagliari players enraged.

Barring the disallowed goal, the game saw very little goalmouth action, with Como only managing to record their first shot after 32 minutes, when Jayden Addai’s left-footed strike from the edge of the area was saved comfortably by Elia Caprile.

The best opportunity of the first half came for the visitors, with Mattia Felici finding some space for himself inside the penalty area, but his effort was prevented from going into the bottom-right corner by Jean Butez.

Fabregas’ men had a golden opportunity to take the lead just under 10 minutes after half-time, but Alvaro Morata was unable to direct his shot either side of Caprile from just a couple of yards out, after the ball fell to the Spaniard from a corner.

The hosts started to crank up the pressure as the half went on. Paz opted to test the goalkeeper from distance once more, but yet again, Caprile made a fantastic save to push his shot away from the bottom-right corner.

As the game approached the closing stages, Como continued to control possession, but there was a distinct lack of attacking quality on show from either side, with neither managing to forge a chance to force the opposition’s goalkeeper into action.

Ultimately, the game ended goalless, seeing the Lariani miss out on the chance to jump into Serie A’s top six ahead of this weekend’s remaining fixtures. Meanwhile, Cagliari continue to slip towards the bottom three as their seven-match winless run continues.
