The United Nations on Sunday said Boko Haram fighters killed at least 110 in Koshobe and other rural communities in Jere Local Government Area of Borno State on Saturday.

The UN released the figure in a statement by its humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria Edward Kallon.

AFP had reported that 43 farmers were killed in the attack.

But Kallon, who described the killing as gruesome, said: “Armed men on motorcycles led a brutal attack on civilian men and women who were harvesting their fields.

“At least 110 civilians were ruthlessly killed and many others were wounded in this attack.

“The incident is the most violent direct attack against innocent civilians this year.

“I call for the perpetrators of this heinous and senseless act to be brought to justice.”

Reports had also suggested the attackers first took the farmers hostage, tied them up before slitting their throats.

It was also reported that some of the farmers sustained gunshot wounds and others kidnapped.

“We have also received reports that several women may have been kidnapped. I call for their immediate release and return to safety. My thoughts are also with the rural communities in the area who are shocked by the brutality of yesterday’s (Saturday’s) attack and fear for their safety,” Kallon added.
